Sushi’s started sleeping under the bed the last few nights. I think it’s a cooler spot for her that’s not directly under the fan. This means when I first wake up, the very second my toe touches the floor, she runs out from under the bed, next to my feet, to see where we’re going first today!
Why do hardware shop guys only speak to my husband? When I’m asking the questions, just answer me!
My husband is literally here to drive me and carry things. He does not know which kind of spackle or shelf brackets or anything to use. He does not know our brand of power drill. Please just answer the person talking to you!
It's been a while since I said "this person wins the internet", but today it is merited.

I always look forward to the Writers of the Future collection, every year there are great new scifi / fantasy authors to discover.
Last year, I thought the collection’s theme was AI, but wasn’t that kind of the theme of life in 2025? This year, for Writers of the Future 42, I thought the common thread was about replicas and reality: artificial versions of real things, fakeouts, lies, and twists. Scifi shorts are a great medium for a twist ending or surprise reveal, and I think this overall theme reflects our current world of deepfakes and post-truth news.
I enjoyed The Triceratops Effect, by S.J. Stevenson. This one had a lot of pulpy fun with time travel and dinosaurs, but twisted the usual plot about preserving the timeline. Recommended for fans of The Domesday Book, by Connie Willis, for a page-turning visit to a fascinating other time, and for readers of 3 Days, 9 Months, 27 Years, a short story by John Scalzi, for spoiler-rific reasons.
There’s a sort of virtual romance in As Long as You Both Shall Live. A beautiful girl dies while beta-testing a virtual environment, but...

Having someone ask ChatGPT in a meeting is like being a grown-ass professional adult in a room full of other grown-ass professional adults trying to solve a problem, while a colleague with one of those baby toys that makes animal sounds repeatedly presses the cow button. And we all have to stop what we're doing and listen to cow go moo and say "wow hm yeah that's not really what we're asking but the cow does definitely go moo, good thoughts"
We found this adorable Star Trek Barbie and Ken in a thrift shop today. It hadn’t been opened but the elastic bits had disintegrated over the years, so Ken’s phaser and Barbie’s communicator were on the bottom on the box. Barbie’s hair was sewn into the box so I let her out carefully by cutting each thread with an X-acto knife.
Look how cute they are! Look at the little details on the com badges and uniforms! (I don’t like that Ken apparently outranks Barbie though. His job is just beach!) Barbie is wearing my favorite Star Trek outfit, I wore that for Halloween once to be Jadzia Dax in the time-travel Tribble episode.
The other day, an acquaintance tried to be insulting about my humanities background but it was only several hours later when I realized “you have a degree in reading books?” was meant to be demeaning and not a slightly-clueless question about how grad school works.
Thanks to the good friends I have in my life, I literally did not register that someone might not see my achievements or care about my interests.
Tuvok, to Chakotay: When you see Captain Janeway, give her this message *makes a neutral face* Tuvok: She will understand what it means. *later* Chakotay: oh, and Tuvok said to give you a message. Chakotay: *makes a neutral face* Janeway: Oh no. The neutral face of displeasure.
I want to be on a work team where everyone is friendly, but I’m trying to set up work drinks right now and it is making me crazy. Every one is saying they want to go, but making zero effort, and it’s annoying. I set it up last semester and it was a nice day (after all the annoyance) so I guess I’ll try it again.
