Favorite thing about them: His character arc, and his relationship with Rapunzel and the profound effect it had on him. From orphan with nothing but a name to call his own, to a thief with a stolen legacy that masked an insecure man, to the most supportive boyfriend/fiancé/husband in animated history, the Prince of the Dark Kingdom, and the Captain of Corona’s royal guard. He has come so far, and to say that I’m proud of how his character has progressed would be an enormous understatement. 

Least favorite thing about them: Disney’s inability to use his real name in any media published after movie. As he said, himself, “For the love of all that is holy, my name is EU-GENE!!”

Favorite line: To Rapunzel’s, “For the record, I like Eugene Fitzherbert much better than Flynn Rider”: “Well... then you’d be the first. But, thank you”, and, “Of course I’m excited. I’m with you. What else could I be?”

Random headcanon: The narration throughout the series, from Tangled through the cartoon series and Ever After, is Eugene and Rapunzel recounting their story to kids at the orphanage in Vardaros that housed Eugene and Lance when they were boys. 

Unpopular opinion: Eugene deserved the promotion to Captain of the Guard.

Tbh New Dream is perhaps one the healthiest, if not the #1 healthiest relationship I've seen in any media (based on many teen and adult media that glamorize toxic romance)! They may not be perfect and have their shortcomings but thats realistically what any couple goes through but they work it out at the end and that's what I love most about them 😍 When I was discussing them with a friend of mine, the first thing she commented on was how healthy they are 😍😭 Lmao I'm fangirling now 😂

The thing is that, they’re perfect in their imperfection. They’re not literally perfect, no, but they’re always learning and growing and changing, and they’re doing it together full of open communication and a desire to do it together. They trust each other implicitly, but they also don’t feel the need to walk on eggshells around each other. They’re friends, and they love each others flaws and foibles. They’re both young, and they have a lot of room to grow, and there is nothing that makes me think their relationship will ever be in any danger.

I love your take on the moongene and Demon Cass AU! Awesome art and great concepts! What was your inspiration for it all?

Thanks! I mean, I had my original circus story continuation of Tangled way back in the day with Eugene as a giant in that, only in that case it was bc he had the sundrop transferred to him when he was revived, and instead of his hair going gold and growing 70ft long, his whole body kind of did gradually. I p much was just waiting around until the series was over to see where I might either interject or do a spinoff with my idea again and the Moongene tangent struck me as a good option. And I just threw the giant thing back in there bc that’s just what I do. Demon Cass came along bc I liked the relation to Zhan Tiri better than the Gothel stuff. :P

Building off the whole Cass/Rapunzel friendship debate, I thought it would've been interesting if we got to see them both resolve issues from both sides (Cass learning to be nice/less bitchy and Rapunzel learning more about boundaries, social skills, respecting other POVs) & come to an understanding of how friendships work. I always get the impression that they were each other's first gal pals, they didn't always know what the right thing was in friendship and S3 could've addressed more of that.

This is honestly where I was hoping and initially thinking season 3 would go. Because the fact of the matter is, no matter how much the audience likes seeing their friendship.... it was a very unbalanced, very unhappy friendship that was barely held together. Look how easy it was for Zhan Tiri to drive them apart. 

There was a TON they both needed to work on. Rapunzel and Cass are both new to friendship and handling it in very different ways. Both need validation as new friends and sheltered youths and were going about it totally differently but in similarly self-destructive and harmful ways. One demanding the other give her validation, attention and respect without giving it in return. And the other doing whatever it took to make the other happy (sometimes even at the cost of her own well being) because they didn’t want to ruin/lose their first friendship. 

And they both had serious issues seeing and respecting the other’s boundaries and skills because both of them were in a position where they felt they had the chance to prove themselves. Cass wanting to prove herself as a capable bodyguard/royal guard- To the point where she controls what Rapunzel does and who she talks to in order to keep them “safe”. Rapunzel wanting to prove she could handle being out in the world and making her own choices. Or (in season 1) prove that she’s a good friend by always being there for Cass even when Cass is asking for space. 

They want very similar things but are on very different ends of the spectrum for how they were handling them. But instead of ever meeting in the middle, talking and compromising to improve their friendship.... They hug and suddenly everything is fine. They had so much more to work on than just the Gothel wedge that was driven between them in season 3. S3 just doubled down on a lot of the bad stuff and created NEW bad stuff to distract from the fact that this wasn’t the best friendship to begin with. While also trying to manipulate the emotions of the audience to try and get them to believe that Cass and Rapunzel were totally best friends all along and their friendship was great and good enough that it was worth Rapunzel repeatedly being willing to RISK DYING for it.

Did you get inspiration for Petra's and Lucien's personalities from other fictional characters or real people you know of? They're both super interesting and I love their dynamic!

Not particularly. No one specific at any rate. 

Honestly a lot of the concepts and characters in The Gilder’s Bane come out of a desire to see things in stories that aren’t usually there. 

Petra is my desire to see a princess be allowed to wear dresses and be girly while also wielding a sword and loving to fight. Usually those two things aren’t allowed to coexist in a character. She’s either a tomboy jock who likes to fight or a girly girl. Petra is both. 

Lucien is an anxious bookworm. Which isn’t an uncommon trope in itself.... But they aren’t usually presented as LEADERS. Especially when said bookworm is a MAN.

There are more things like that in the story but... I can’t really talk about them yet without giving stuff away that hasn’t come up yet.

Not a question but I really love reading your character analyses and posts about Cassandra showing her as a human with both good and bad traits rather than someone who's entirely toxic and demonic lol. I love Cass and I love that she's a complex character, which made me love her in the first place. Sure I have mixed-negative feelings about the whole Gothel plot in S3, especially because of how it played out in the latter half of the season but overall I think Cass is a great character!

Thanks so much! It was a sweet surprise to see this in my messages. Cass is such a great, complex character, and I get tired of parts of the fandom dismissing that complexity. And yeah, I can understand having issues with the final season’s plot. But thanks again! :)

Would you think that there are any similarities between Eugene and Sokka from ATLA? If so, what would they be?

The biggest similarity between Eugene and Sokka (and it’s one of my favorite things in a group dynamic of characters) is that each one is the “normal guy” in their group. No magical powers, no bending, they’re just the “________ and sarcasm guy” of the group. They are all heart and have to really fight and try for everything they get. They’re funny, and they shine, and it’s wonderful. (Yes, Sokka is my favorite in ATLA. XD)

It's funny and interesting how even though the Fandom is divided on opinions of characters/ships/plot points, at the end of the day, we mostly agree on negativity when it comes to Gothel or Frederic lol!
