I’m not gonna post again for a while so I’m just dropping this low quality tts doodle page I did before I got tumblr 👩🏾🦯➡️
Rewatching so here’s some messy sketches
Whenever I hear King Frederick Hate—it almost always about what he did to Varian, and sometimes it’s about his dictatorship.
Which yeah, was obviously horrible.
But can we talk more about how he treated Rapunzel and she just had to accept it bc he was her dad?
He literally locked her in the tallest tower the castle had and told her she wasn’t ready and that he was keeping her safe (sound familiar??). This would definitely drudge up traumatic memories and I feel like everyone just glazed over that.
He constantly undermines her, treats her like a subject instead of his daughter.
And not to mention the amount of pressure he put onto Raps on her coronation (“you are not only representing yourself and the family, but all of corona”). That stuck with her and she even sang it to herself (“okay no pressure, just introducing myself to the most important people in the world, representing my mom dad and entire kingdom”)
Plus he also ignores arianna and undermines her very much. Like when she disagreed to lock Raps in her tower and many other times I’m forgetting. This probably has something to do with the fact that Arianna wasn’t royalty but she married into it (I suspect this bc of that episode with willow), maybe she was a noble but not royalty. That’s shitty. That’s not funny.
In this essay I will
TTS Untangled: Parents
Here are the (living) parent's designs (save for Faith's because I'm still figuring them out, as I gotta design and write them from scratch), alongside their children
Frederic & Arianna
Design points, I mostly just focused on using their movie versions as reference. So for Arianna, giving her that sharper jaw, and letting her actually look a bit older.
For story/personalities
King Frederic - He's still going to be heavily flawed, his poor choices coming from fear and grief. But I don't want him to feel so... intimidating? In the movie, he looked like the kind of king that a small child might not be afraid to run up to. If we're supposed to think Corona's monarchy are good people, let it actually be shown, he's trying his best to care for his kingdom (this will have some minor changes to how some of Season 1 is handled, but I'll make it work)
Queen Arianna - Personality wise, won't change much. But I do want to give her and Rapunzel's relationship a bit more time to be shown, as she tries to fill the role of "Mother" that was taken from her for so long.
Cap (still need to properly name him)
Design wise, I again looked more towards the movie for reference, adding back the flame design on the armor that's not present in the show.
Personality, much like Arianna, stays about the same, but I want to try and show his and Cassandra's relationship more.
I... also still need to give him a proper name.
Quirin
No design changes besides the art style
As Varian's role/moondrop connection has changed, I've also been working on fleshing out Quirin's background during his time in the Brotherhood. It's still a work in progress, but my thoughts currently are that he was the General, before the kingdom was evacuated and abandoned. There's more, but that might fall more into general Dark Kingdom (really gotta name it) lore, so I'm saving that for now. Just know, Quirin and the Moonstone at one point had a bond. With the drops being sentient, think Athena and Odysseus from EPIC.
It's interesting to when Rapunzel is talking to Eugene and he asks if she will go back and she is quick to say "No!" and then "it's complicated." She really loves freedom but feels guilty cause Gothel has always hammered it into her head that her hair is worth more than her. "A gift like that has to be protected. That's why she never - why I never left." Poor Rapunzel grew up actively being told that the only part of her that mattered was her magic.
What a crazy shift that must have been to be loved by Eugene after she lost her magic and hair. I wonder if that affected her self-worth a lot. Her hair was probably all she saw her own worth in, and to suddenly be without that must have made her feel so unlovable without that way of giving to people. Giving has always been her love language, and it's no wonder why. But soon after, Eugene & her parents show her what real love is. 💜👑🦎
