“Hannibal laughs, a small noise full of mostly quiet breaths, and Will whips back around to look at him. Almost immediately without meaning to, Will finds himself helplessly smiling at him in shock. There’s a genuineness to the way the other man is laughing—as if the sound was surprised out of him. As if he didn’t mean for it to happen, but it did anyway. Will feels something warm settling in his stomach, like a candle has been lit inside of him.
Distantly, he thinks it will burn him if he lets it.”

Elise’s parents are being ushered away in shock blankets, faces blank and pale. He wonders if they knew about her illness and could sense the time limit looming over them. He wonders if it’s worse or better that it no longer matters."
