Tavnazia Safehold
San d'Oria 9-1 Breaking Barriers
Summary: The royal princes and the Papsque do some scheme'n of their own. Of course things go to shit. We are called into the royal chambers, but this time around, the king is nowhere to be seen. Instead, it's the two royal brothers, who inform us that their father is ill, but Papsque Shamonde has requested a meeting, so here we are. After the holy man comes strollin' in, he says that just recently a strange magical "Elemental Barrier" has been erected over the entire city of San d'Oria. The caveat: this kind of barrier can only be cast by someone with Tavnazian royal blood, so our old bud Rochefogne is up to some hijinks. When the princes express their concern, the Papsque assures them that this barrier was used to protect Tavnazia during the Great War, and it doesn't seem to be harming the Kingdom now. He literally says, in one breath, that there should be no hasty decisions made... and then decides "LET'S HAVE THIS ADVENTURER BREAK IT!" Then he scoots off to do holy things. I dunno. So we're going to go find the magic seals that are fueling this rare, protective barrier. Hmm. Trion and Pieuje mull over this as Princess Claidie comes in, distressed at the news and wanting to be more diplomatic with thier newly-revealed uncle. Despite her brothers' warnings, she blabs some pretty heavy state secrets right in front of us: that San d'Oria actually did betray Tavnazia during the war, using them as a diversionary sacrifice in order to buy more time to recover and counterattack against the beastmen. So... he has a reason to be mad. Basically. Trion points out that it was this tactic that saved thier own kingdom, but Claidie isn't satisfied. The beastmen had some sort of unknown weapon that backfired, blew up, and more or less killed everything for miles. The city was destroyed, and she figures that Rochefogne is owed at least a discussion or two over it. She makes her brother promise not to hurt him if they find him, and they halfheartedly agree. The princes dismiss everyone to GTFO. After we leave with Claidie, Piueje mentions to Trion under his breath that it is time to call on the "Cadavres des Corneilles". Trion freaks out, but the younger prince points out that Rochfogne could do a lot of damage if allowed to run around doing whatever he wants, and Trion finally agrees. Outside, Claidie asks us not to hurt Rochefogne either. Whateva lady we do what we want! So we go to the farthest corners of Vana'diel and smash up the magic seals, which is decidedly less exciting than it may sound. The last is located in the hills of the Batallia Downs. There, we (of course) run into Rochefogne, who helpfully informs us that the barrier he put into place was to protect Lightbinger from the orcs now that everyone apparently knows it's in San d'Oria. He compares us to the princes (which really hurts, man :< ) and draws his sword, because you know cutting our throats is really gonna bring that barrier back. We are saved by "mysterious adventurer" Eideialc, who offers to be his mediator to the royal family. He claims that this is not a matter that can be discussed, and she demands to know what he is really planning. Before he can answer, a new group of dudes show up, wearing the same harness armor. The leader is an Elvaan named Coteaulepoint, who names their title as the "Cadavres des Corneilles." Well, they sure showed up fast. They are a group made of serious prisoners from the Oubliette who serve as assassins in exchange for the royal family waiving their death sentences. Rochefogne doesn't seem to care one way or the other, but Eideialc freaks out when she realizes that "they broke their promise". GREAT NOW YOU BLEW YOUR COVER. She blocks their way with her own body, but the assassins call her out as the princess Claidie, which would totally be an awesome twist if they hadn't spoiled it literally two lines of text ago. Coteaulepoint says that if she wants to play adventurer, he'll just kill her too, and moves to shank her something good. Rochefogne pushes her out of the way and takes the blow for his niece, falling off the cliff to the water below.
The assassins throw a tanrum because they were supposed to bring back his head, and Coteaulepoint finds a way to the water to see if he can find the body. He comes back up, and his fellows complain that he took a long tim to come back empty handed. He assures them he got the armor as proof of their kill, and they run off, leaving Claidie to fall to her knees in despair over what royal douchebags her brothers are. When we return, Pieuje is waiting for us. He congratulates us on destroying the barrier, and then broaches the sensitive subject of the off-the-books shady assassins that we bumped into. We can either wink and nod or play dumb and piss him off, but regardless he makes it clear that under no circumstances is anyone to know that the Royal Family employs its own hard-time criminals for its dirty work. Trion enters and announces that the Rite of Succession will be held soon, and dismisses us. After we leave, Pieuje has a wierd moment of clarity and wonders aloud if perhaps if neither prince is fit to be the next king. Trion laughs him off. Meanwhile, in the garden, Claidie is mourning next to her mother's grave, when an Orc appears from absolutly nowhere and goes to attack her. She is saved by Coteaulepoint, the Cadavres leader, and in return she shouts at him to leave. Ignoring her, he muses over the Orcs' advantage now that the barrier is gone, and asks that she speak with him. She is confused, and it zooms in on his face, and...
zomg.
