All You Had To Do Was Stay
Sometimes guys are so dumb, and Taylor encapsulates that perfectly in this song. Or at least one specific scenario where a guy is inexplicably dumb. I’m speaking from my own perspective and my own experiences when I say that I REALLY do not understand the mind of a man has been in a healthy, steady relationship with you for months, then his life all of a sudden becomes a little more difficult due to one thing or another, and despite how incredibly supportive, kind, welcoming of his problems, and understanding you’ve been, his entire outlook on the relationship shifts and he becomes a terrible partner. He becomes absent, pushes you out when he should be pulling you closer, and he, or other people in his life, trick him into thinking you are the problem when all you’ve ever been is good to him. Suddenly your perfect relationship gets rocky, you stop saying “I love you” after every phone call, he acts weird every time you try to make plans, and it feels like everything is crumbling around you when the ones you love tell you it’s time to let go and your heart is insisting you can fix it, that he just needs time, needs you, but your brain knows you deserve better. Taylor shows how idiotic it is when a guy quits before it’s over when he could have just STAYED. Why wouldn’t he just stay, talk to her, and work through his own struggles and still take on her own, because that’s what you do when you’re in a loving relationship that should involve a 100% effort from both involved parties. He shouldn’t have to stand in her doorway pleading for forgiveness when he could have just stayed. He shouldn’t cause her to cry over a lack of understanding of why he couldn’t have just dealt with life while still loving her, why he couldn’t just understand her emotions and care about her as much as he cares about himself, why he is such a dummy. Taylor shows the struggle that comes with the decision of accepting or not accepting him back into your life when he’s caused you pain, about wanting to do you can go back to the happy times you keep playing back in your head while wanting more to maintain your dignity and acknowledge your own worth. It’s an underapprecited struggle that Taylor sheds light on in this amusing, yet incredibly relatable, song. And I, for one, appreciate it. Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.
