The Basterds – Profile
🔪 Lt. Aldo “The Apache” Raine – A 37-year-old coal miner and bootlegger from Maynardville, Tennessee. Served as a “war consultant” for the SOE after his stint in the Lincoln Brigade during the Spanish Civil War. Formerly a member of the Devil’s Brigade, with whom he learned guerrilla warfare and took part in the Allied Invasion of Sicily. Raised by a Black woman after the death of his mother and being abandoned by his alcoholic father. Was nearly lynched by the Klan for his bootlegging and having an intimate relationship with a Jewish man, hence the noose scar on his neck. Hates the Nazis and the Klan because to him they represent the scourge of hatred and regression the world needs to overcome. Passionate about his roots and doesn’t forget where he came from. Is a tough and unorthodox leader who truly, deeply cares about his team. The best cook of the Basterds, but no one knows it except for him.
🐻 Sgt. Donny “The Bear Jew” Donowitz – The 32-year-old second-in-command of the Basterds who has achieved paranormal status among the German army because he executes Nazi soldiers with a baseball bat. Worked in his father Sy’s barber shop in Boston, went to beauty school, and dreams of opening his own beauty parlor in Boston when the war ends. Is the father of Lee Donowitz, born to Donny’s ex (with whom he is on somewhat amicable terms) in 1941.
⛓️💥 Sgt. Hugo Stiglitz – A 34-year-old former German soldier who murdered 13 Gestapo officers. Was going to be executed for his crime, but got recruited by the Basterds as the eleventh member of the team. Is a psychopath who moved from orphanage to foster home and back again as a child. Has not experienced much love or affection in his life, so friendship doesn’t come easy to him. Nominally Catholic, but doesn’t care about religion one way or another. Fluent in German and speaks decent English. Knows everything about everyone.
🚬 Cpl. Wilhelm Wicki – A 36-year-old Austrian Jew who became an American citizen in the late 1930s. A heavy smoker and card-player who has been married and divorced twice. Has lots of nautical knowledge due to having spent time as a dockworker and first-mate. The best long-range marksman of the Basterds, and has extremely steady hands, so coupled with his knot-tying skills, is great at stitching up wounds. A deadpan-humored intellectual who is often quiet but starts to go crazy if he has no one to banter with. Fluent in English and German.
🍳 Pfc. Omar Ulmer – A 26-year-old Jew from Philly. Is very mellow and kindhearted, outright silly, and confident in his masculinity. Was training to become an assistant professor in economics before the war, but worked at a local restaurant on the side, so he’s effectively the camp cook. Is also a hobby photographer. Often the butt of Aldo’s jokes.
🚊 Pfc. Smithson “Little Man” Utivich – A 24-year-old Jew from Manhattan. Switches from being neurotic to completely stoic at the drop of a hat. Is a closeted gay man who has been picked on in the past for his slightly effeminate mannerisms and appearance, something he is very insecure about. Has a deep passion for vehicles such as cars, planes, trains, etc.
💣 Pfc. Gerold Hirschberg – A 22-year-old Jew from Chicago. The shortest Basterd, and the most rambunctious. Has the loudest laugh you’ll ever hear. A high school dropout who was training to be a plumber. The platoon machine gunner, automatic weapons “specialist”, and de-facto grenadier.
🦷 T-5 Simon Sakowitz – A 23-year-old Jew from Fort Lauderdale serving as the Basterds’ combat medic. His dad is a dentist, so he knows a thing or two about teeth as well. Is very good at keeping his cool in stressful situations.
🕍 Cpl. Andy Kagan – A 27-year-old recently ordained rabbi from Brooklyn who conducts services for the Basterds. Is known for his bluntness. Justifies his use of extreme violence because he sees WWII as a war of annihilation in which either the Nazis or the Jews will come out alive, not both. It won’t be the former if he has anything to do with it.
🔩 Pfc. Michael Zimmerman – A 29-year-old Jew from Livingston. An electrician and mechanic by trade who switched from job to job straight out of high school. Knows a ton of useful skills, and even claims he could defuse a bomb easy. Carries a kippah in his pocket.
one thing I adore about the time they go to the empire to find the Facsimile Ramus is the way that every single facsimile is drawn with so much more humanity than the main cast.. they're way more realistic, which I think is to emulate a sense of uncanniness.
We as readers are so used to the classic manga style with less detailed faces and fluffy hair, but then we get faced with a sallow faced man and the endless copies of him... And since they're all copies of the same person they have to feel at least a little uncanny to look at
Don't get me wrong, the artwork we see through most of the manga is a blurred line between realistic and not, the detail and realism on buildings and wagons and landscapes is genuinely brilliant and facinating- but the people tend to look like anime people, even when they're making strong expressions.
But not the Facsimiles....
They don't have the simple noses and flat faces. You can see every crease of their skin even when stylised.
Along with it being all uncanny and that I do think, though I may be stretching it here, that they're meant to feel more human.
The Facsimile Ramus has such a strong personality and that rubs off on every single one of his copies, they are caring and thoughtful even if they don't realise it. Like as soon as one of them gets asked "Why did you become a soldier?" They spend the rest of their life contemplating "Why?" Even though they sacrifice their kin and build a hierarchy based on scars on their head... They're very much individuals. It's unfortunate they only know what they're created to do until something else sparks their mind.
Very refreshing when it comes to the Army of Clones trope, there's obviously a lot of thought put into this.
Ok so, let's start cooking what I think Mora's ability might possibly be....

I think based on us seeing a freaky ramus baby thing both just before when we meet Mora and when Lucas and Miura discover how Rami are born, there's definitely gonna be something here related to time.
And we all know how much Mizuki Sora loves fucking with time.
More accurately, I think it's something to do with reversing time! For an example reversing time on a broken pot to fix it and get rid of imperfections based on weathering and age. Then in a situation where he Flowers he might have the ability to do a giant time reversal much like the way the Futurists came back to present day.
This is based on VERY lose evidence so further input would be brilliant if people can find more evidence for and against 🩷
Back to the theorising- IF he does have an ability along those lines, that explains why he was so vocal about not wanting to hit Lucas if they wanted to take him back alive. This could also apply for like- Super Mega Disease Ability that Kills You Now, but why would there have been a focus on the freaky branch baby back when we met him? That and- it wouldn't be a fun way to extend the plot.... But it would make sense they would want to target Lucas and even Zoe, as Lucas has been said to have the ability to change the tide of war on so many occasions- and with Zoe's time stealing there's gotta be a way you can mix Time Reversal and Time Stealing into a super op ability.
Also if Miura is gonna turn into a freaky branch baby I'm gonna cry so hard I pass out 💔
