i simply think the best fictional trope is when the protagonist sets out to defeat a great force of darkness and destruction and tries to triumph by running or fighting or outsmarting it and keeps failing and becomes more and more afraid of it and in a moment of humility and grace finally approaches the darkness outright and realizes as they do so that the darkness is actually a part of themselves that they severed through shame and self-hatred and all they need to do to vanquish it is welcome it home. what braver act than to look a monster in the face and call it by your own name!!!
