british upside #3
afternoon tea.
i was introduced to afternoon tea by none other than my mama. often times during my middle school-high school years i would skip school and spend the day with my mom or my aunt lauren shopping and more common than not, take a break for some scones with clotted cream, finger sandwiches and other delectable treats. since i am in london where afternoon tea has been a british tradition for hundreds of years, i had to check off my bucket list to have afternoon tea in england.
there are four different types of afternoon tea:
cream tea: tea and scones with clotted cream* and jam.
light tea: tea, scones with clotted cream* and jam and sweets**
full tea: tea, scones with clotted cream* and jam, savories (tiny sandwiches), sweets** and dessert.
*also known as Devonshire cream
**includes cookies, cakes and shortbreads
sounds amazing, right?
quirky tea superstitions:
- two teaspoons on a saucer denoted an impending pregnancy or a wedding
- tea that was brewed stronger than usual indicated a new friendship
"love and scandal are the best sweeteners of tea."-- unknown
so girls (and guys) grab your mothers (or girlfriends or boyfriends or just friends), find the nearest tea house and treat yourselves to a wonderful british tradition!
