Catarina de Bragança, Infanta of Portugal, Queen consort of England, Scotland and Ireland as wife of King Charles II, from 1662 to 1685.
Portrait by Peter Lely (1663-1665)
1661: When princess Catherine of Braganza arrived in Britain to wed Charles II, she was shocked to find men urinating all over the palace. Her ladies claimed “that they cannot stir abroad without seeing in every corner great beastly English pricks battering against every wall.”
She is credited with introducing the British to tea-drinking, which was then widespread among the Portuguese nobility.
