Latinos make it so hard for other Latinos to feel Latino enough.
I know and I still struggle with it. Selena was a big motivation for a lot of people and she did not grow up speaking Spanish. She talked about how she felt so out of touch and she wanted to relate and apart of it and so SHE LEARNED.
It wasn’t just singing in Spanish. She learned how to speak it for interviews and daily conversation.
Dude it sucks not being able to understand. I learned my Spanish working with the Mexicans in the kitchens at Steak ‘n Shake bruh. And I’ve only continued to learn. Cuz it sucks not being able to understand the jokes, to be apart of the community and if I’m gonna shame a Latino it’s gonna be for not bothering TO LEARN the language.
Especially when you’re an adult, and have the ability to learn but CHOOSE not to.
I have no issue judging someone who claims to be Latino but ONLI shows interest in the culture unless they can benefit from it. That’s where I take issue. But if you’re trying? If you’re having fun and dancing even if you can’t dance for shit ain’t no one should be judging you. If anything, Benito is giving ppl the strength to be PROUD of who they are and where they come from.

For me? It was too Mexican for white people and not Mexican enough for Mexicans.
Those of us born in the states struggle with that shit a lot. It was hard being told that just cuz I went to better school than my cousins that I was more white than anything. Mind you, I am from the ghetto, I still live in the ghetto. First thing I see when I walk outside is a lot of black and brown. Those are my people when I first went to an all white school at the time that shit scared me. We were shamed constantly and told to always do more to fit in with the white people. I only got to start embracing my culture after growing up and realizing how much racist shit I let slide by my so called ‘white’ friends.

Becky G started out with English music the same way and look at her now? Pretty much only doing Spanish music, she is a such a big advocate for Mexico and it’s NOT quiet about her distain for 🧊. Snow the tha Product was also rapping in English, but she was never afraid to spit in Spanish and so much of her music now is Spanish and political.
