Sioux Falls principals: 7% of our new teachers are no good
About 7 percent of the first-year teachers in the Sioux Falls School District are struggling, according to a survey of the principals who hired them.

Asked to rate their new teachers’ overall effectiveness after six months, the principals said the following:
21 percent are outstanding;
37 percent excellent;
35 percent good;
6 percent OK but have clear weaknesses; and
1 percent not effective
The district performed the survey to check the validity of TeacherFit, an online screening tool they used last year for the first time. TeacherFit underestimated the candidate 7 percent of the time and overrated them 9 percent of the time, at least as compared to the principals’ assessments.
The new teachers averaged a 6.24 on TeacherFit’s 9-point assessment where 5 is average. So at least according to TeacherFit, the district hires candidates who are slightly above-average in quality.
And, according to their principals, the new teachers do perform slightly above average.
As for the 7 percent, several of those new hires won’t be back next year.
Some have quit and some have been fired. According to the April 8 board report, six first-year teachers – one each from Laura Wilder, Bridges at Horace Mann, Hawthorne, All-City, Patrick Henry and Whittier – will not have their contracts renewed.
