Why Tumblr?

As someone new to the field of school librarianship, there were a number of resources to comb through when I thought of doing a blog. I have used Tumblr for fun in the past and thought it would be interesting to try out in a more professional context. In my past experience with Tumblr, I have found the source to be user-friendly, easy to navigate, and it allows for all kinds of learning through a variety of posts. Instead of just writing a long blog, you can post a picture or video, which may speak more effectively to an audience who may have dyslexia or other troubles with reading. I am looking forward to seeing how the school library community utilizes Tumblr and plan on keeping the blog going throughout my career. I know it will be great for connection, collaboration, and inspiration. 

When considering a professional learning network (PLN) one of the most important factors is familiarity. Since Tumblr has been around for a while now, it may be familiar to members of my professional learning network. Familiarity of a source often leads to ease of use as well. When members of a professional learning network follow each other on Tumblr, they can see what they have previously done in the classroom or get ideas from one another through posts. Even though Tumblr is known more for it’s fun gifs and memes, I also believe it can be a great resource for educators as well. 

Like some staff, many of the younger patrons of a school library are already familiar with Tumblr. By showing these users how to make Tumblr work as a library resource, this provides students with another way of looking at a website they may use on a daily basis. A blog from Tumblr creates a collection of sources, images, gifs, or videos for students and can do well to supplement what students learn outside of the classroom. With it’s familiarity and user-friendly qualities, Tumblr is a valuable resource for the school librarian, professional learning network, and the library patrons as well.
