Repost from @zinneducationproject • One hundred years ago today, in what became known as the Tulsa Massacre, white supremacists destroyed a thriving Black community in Oklahoma. This is one of countless white supremacist massacres in U.S. history. . . “From May 31 through June 1, deputized whites killed more than 300 African Americans. They looted and burned to the ground 40 square blocks of 1,265 African American homes, including hospitals, schools, and churches, and destroyed 150 businesses. White deputies and members of the National Guard arrested and detained 6,000 Black Tulsans who were released only upon being vouched for by a white employer or other white citizen. Nine thousand African Americans were left homeless and lived in tents well into the winter of 1921. . .” . . This description is by Linda Christensen of Rethinking Schools in the introduction to her lesson, “Burning Tulsa: The Legacy of Black Dispossession.” She goes on to describe why and how she and her colleagues teach about the Tulsa Massacre (often inadequately described in textbooks as a “race riot”): . . “We didn’t want students to get lost in the history of Tulsa, though it needs to be remembered; we wanted them to recognize the historical patterns of stolen wealth in Black, brown, and poor communities. We wanted them to connect the current economic struggles of people of color by staying alert to these dynamics from the past. We wanted them to see that in many ways Tulsa and other Black communities are still burning, still being looted.” . . Australian Peter Norman wore an Olympic Project for Human Rights pin, and stood in solidarity with their protest. Smith and Carlos were suspended from the team by the U.S. Olympic Committee two days later. . . Dave Zirin notes, “When mentioned at all in U.S. history textbooks, the famous photo appears with almost no context. For example, Pearson/Prentice Hall’s United States History places the photo opposite a short three-paragraph section, ‘Young Leaders Call for Black Power.’ The photo’s caption says simply that ‘. . . U.S. athletes Tommie Smith and John Carlos raised gloved fists in protest against discrimination.’ . . In 1494, he launched the trans-Atlantic slave trade, sending enslaved Taínos from the Caribbean to Spain, and forcing them to find gold in Hispaniola. . . Shortly after, Spaniards brought kidnapped and enslaved Africans to the Americas. One Spanish governor complained as early as 1503 that enslaved Africans were “teaching disobedience to the Indians.” Spaniards put Africans to work in the mines and harvesting sugar cane (which Columbus had brought on his second voyage). . . Of course, the Taínos needed no instruction in resistance. They fought back every way they could. . . In the Americas, it began with Columbus: Taíno slavery, African slavery, enslaving women for rape, exploiting nature for profit. But also anti-colonial resistance. . . This Indigenous Peoples’ Day, we remember the lives that were stolen, the wealth extracted, but also those who fought — and fight — for an end to the violence, and an end to using nature to satisfy greed. . . Repost from @zinneducationproject • Born into a family of abolitionists who were also active in the Underground Railroad, Sarah Parker Remond (1824-1894) gave her first abolitionist speech at the age of sixteen. This was a radical action at the time because she was young and Black, but also because she was a woman. . . Remond was a member of the Salem Female Anti-Slavery Society, in addition to other antislavery organizations. When Remond was 27 she refused to accept segregated seating at an event at Boston’s Howard Athenaeum. While being forcibly removed, Remond was pushed down a flight of stairs by a police officer. After taking the city of Boston to court she was awarded a settlement of $500 in a case that drew national attention. . . Remond traveled across the country as an abolitionist lecturer and also to England. She eventually moved to Italy and became a physician, choosing self-imposed exile over life in the United States. . . U.S. history textbooks describe the accomplishments and challenges of the major presidential administrations—George Washington had the Revolutionary War, Abraham Lincoln the Civil War, Teddy Roosevelt the Spanish-American War, and so on. Children’s books put students on a first-name basis with the presidents, engaging readers with stories of their dogs in the Rose Garden or childhood escapades. Washington, D.C.’s Smithsonian Institution welcomes visitors to an exhibit of the first ladies’ gowns and White House furnishings. . . Nowhere in all this information is there any mention of the fact that more than one in four U.S. presidents were involved in human trafficking and slavery. These presidents bought, sold, and bred enslaved people for profit. Of the 12 presidents who were enslavers, more than half kept people in bondage at the White House. For this reason, there is little doubt that the first person of African descent to enter the White House—or the presidential homes used in New York (1788–90) and Philadelphia (1790–1800) before construction of the White House was complete—was an enslaved person. . . The White House itself, the home of presidents and quintessential symbol of the U.S. presidency, was built with slave labor, just like most other major building projects had been in the 18th-century United States, including many of our most famous buildings like Philadelphia’s Independence Hall, Boston’s Faneuil Hall, Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello, and James Madison’s Montpelier. President Washington initially wanted to hire foreign labor to build the White House, but when he realized how costly it would be to pay people fairly, he resorted to slave labor.” . . From the Zinn Education Project - On December 9,1864 there was a Massacre at Ebenezer Creek. On the march to Savannah, thousands of African American families who had just escaped from slavery were left to drown by Sherman’s Army. Following the massacre, demands by Black ministers led to the short-lived land distribution during Reconstruction known as Sherman’s Special Field Order No. 15.
