I’m back! It has been a while since I last posted and a lot has changed since. So, on that note, I am going to be doing updates for each individual hamster, as well as sharing some plans I have for the future. I’ll start with some overall changes that have been made.
Their main food has been switched from Harry Hamster to Burgess Dwarf Hamster. They seem to like it better and fill their pouches a lot more often since I made the change.
Cleaning of cages is still tracked, but rather than cleaning at regular intervals, I now clean when it is actually needed to avoid wasting bedding and causing unnecessary stress.
I now use woodshavings mixed with shredded paper as substrate rather than woodshavings alone for extra softness and comfort. It seems to be working a lot better in terms of odor control.
Cloud & Cactus are approximately 3 months old.
Albert is approximately 6.5 months old.
Cloud has changed the most out of the bunch in so many ways. Her coat is now a beautiful mix of white and pale gray and is so soft you can only just feel it. Cloud is still enjoying her flying saucer and has taken a liking to climbing as well. She greets anyone who comes up to her cage by climbing the bars and standing there waiting for you to start smoothing her through them. Cloud now likes coming out of the cage to be handled and she clearly enjoys herself and is really easy to handle. She eats the most out of everyone - that and the fact she is white and gray makes her look like an actual cloud. She is usually the earliest waker, but she often goes for a nap after being up for about an hour. Cloud comes out the most during the day and always seems happy to see anyone. She is quite a demanding young lady, from food quantity to how fast you enable her to move while handling her. She enjoys walking from hand to hand and will let you know if you’re not going fast enough by simply nearly walking straight off the edge of your hand. All in all, Cloud is happy, healthy, and living up to her name.
Cactus is such a baby. If she’s in my hands, she’s happy. She has the cutest little face and is happy to do anything you want her to. Thankfully, she cut out her bad habit of crashing things in her cage around for attention. Cactus uses her wheel a lot more regularly now and has become a lot faster. She also eats a lot more, she even donated some food to me by emptying her pouches in my pocket. Cactus is the best company and is such a good little friend. She hasn’t changed much at all since I last posted about her, so this section is short.
The hamster that could beat Usain Bolt in a race. The hamster that is near impossible to handle. The hamster I had to catch in mid-air after he decided to jump from my hands. Albert, everyone. He is still incredibly skittish, despite my constant efforts to calm his nerves. It’s a nightmare to handle him because all he wants to do is run away. As soon as I even go near his cage, he starts running around everywhere out of fear. He has voluntarily come to me once, and that was after I held my hand completely still in his cage for nearly 15 minutes, as well as bribing him with his favorite treat, a milk drop. I will never understand how a hamster can run so fast. It looks like he’s just teleporting around the cage. Albert has definitely improved since I brought him home, but he is still incredibly challenging. It is certainly quite an experience. I’m not sure if he will ever get to the same stage as the girls, but even getting him close is going to take a long time.
To be honest, I don’t think I will ever be without a hamster again. They’re tiny but they have changed my life in incredible ways. This blog will likely go on for a long time because of that. For a little while, I will most likely not get another hamster due to space being tight enough already. I would love to have another, but it isn’t practical currently.
