THEY DID THAT
EVELETH, Minn. -- Team Jared Allen wasn’t afraid of the reigning Olympic gold medalists Friday, Nov. 30, when they competed in their first professional curling match at the Curl Mesabi Classic in Eveleth.Maybe they should have been a little bit scared after the John Shuster Rink swept past the rookies,...
I’m supposed to hate the fact that a former football player is making a run at high-level curling because he wanted to find a sport in which he could compete at an Olympic level. That whole “anyone can do it” attitude toward curling comes from a place of ignorance and it annoys a lot of people who put in thousands of hours honing their skills.
That said, Jared Allen has a lifetime of physical conditioning. He understands team dynamics. He got a top-level coach. As long as he upholds the Spirit of Curling and takes no shortcuts to the top, it’s OK by me.
Besides, I don’t think I could get 3 points off of Team Shuster.
#TEAM SHUSTER
Great article laying out the struggles John Shuster has faced over the last 12 years and how he overcame them. I'm in awe of anyone who can handle so much flak for so long and just keep fighting. Now they'll be playing for the gold*, something the USA have never done!
