I’m gonna tell you the truth about Verònique. She wasn’t always like this, you know? She used to be a little crazy, but a very sweet, caring girl. It all changed after Ian. “Who’s Ian?”, Verònique never really had a good relationship with her parents, especially with her mother, they always thought she was the black sheep of the family. She was 16 at the time, her two older sisters were already in college and Dominic was just a little boy. Even though she always had good grades, she bailed school almost every day, to smoke and mostly to visit art galleries, that was always a passion of hers. But one day the school called her parents, saying she hasn’t showed up in two weeks. They had this huge fight; she yelled at them that she would leave the house and they would never hear about her again. So the next day, she waited them to go to work and broke into her father’s safe, she took five thousand pounds from it. She went to the train station with a pack of cigarettes, a camera, her drawing book, a couple of shirts and the money into a bag and bought herself a one way ticket to London. She had never been to London. As soon as she got there she went to a gallery near King’s Cross, she spent the entire day there. Ian was the owner of the gallery and he was impressed to see how much she knew about art, he then offered her a bed in his atelier and in exchange she would work for him. He was 35 at the time and was also a painter. He taught her everything he knew and encouraged her to paint, more and more. She soon fell deeply in love with him and little by little he loved her back. They didn’t cared about the age difference, and since she never really looked her age, no one else cared either. So they became much more than lovers, they were inseparable. He took her on an around the world trip, introduced her to famous artists, even put together her first exhibition. Things were perfect between them and he was everything she always wanted. Until one day, when she was about to turn 18 she suggested they got married and Ian flipped out. He told her he was already married and had two kids, the older one was nearly her age. Every month, for a week or two he went away, saying it was only a business trip, but in reality he went to visit his family, who lived in Manchester. He told Verònique that they were having fun together, but that he would never divorce his wife to marry her. And that was the end of the world to her. She left him, got really depressed, started doing drugs… That’s when she called me saying she wanted to go back to Paris, asking me if she could stay in my place, for a couple of weeks. I had just finished Art School and my parents gave me my own apartment. So I said yes, I knew her for a long time and always thought she was very talented. But when she arrived, she was a completely different person, more talented than ever, I have to say, but something inside of her was broken. I persuade her to finish her studies and to go to college, which she did, but every day she came home she was with a different man, she changed men as she changed her clothes. She drank a lot as well, the best her art got, the worst she got. I tried everything, but nothing seemed to reach her anymore. She didn’t want to be ok or to get back in control of her life, she wanted to watch the world burn, she wanted chaos. And just when I had no more hopes for her, you came along. As much as she tried to hide, she loved you. In a way I thought she could never love again, what made be sure of that was that painting; she never painted anyone, even when people offered her money to do so. I could see in her eyes, the morning after, in Mallorca. “Then why did she vanish?” Because she closed her heart after Ian, she sworn to herself she would never love anyone again. Then she saw you with another woman and she couldn’t handle it. ”So you think I’m doing the right thing, by staying with her?” Absolutely, she needs you, she needs this, and I know you love her. Just be patience, she’s learning how to love again, it’s not easy.
