I think people who say that German is not a melodic language simply have bad teachers. I took it for a year at school and -loved- it, but I didn't take any more of it because I didn't have anyone to speak it with. =( I really want to take it again (and I agree with anon, Beethoven's 9th is beautiful <3).

amazing ^^ and thanks for sharing your experiences! my english teacher said something similar (about german being rather strange to pronounce) but she mostly did it to point out differences between the pronunciation of certain consonants. it definitely has a melody. i’m always glad to hear about people being interested in learning german. isn’t it nice to be able to read Schiller, Goethe etc in its original form? and yes, Beethoven is really a great musical journey :)

Re: your friend getting the Visa, I replied but you mightn't have seent the eply, so: IDK it mostly helped to be 100% honest and explain things carefully and lucidly if they ask anything. Just cross fingers and hope her interviewer isn’t an arsehole, it's usually a 50–50 chance. Oh, and tell her to TRY not to show nerves, the if the interviewer's an arsehole he'll dislike that… >_> And wish her good luck from another foreign student! Tell her she'll get the visa, don't worry!
