Fills the Park Avenue Armory - The New York Times (Photos: Ruth Fremson) Bill Grimes of The New York Times wrote a great piece about the process of bringing Douglas Gordon & Hélène Grimaud's tears become to life! "The Wade Thompson Drill Hall at the Park Avenue Armory is a large room. Its 55,000 square feet have accommodated, in recent years, an ersatz heathland for Kenneth Branagh in Macbeth and the three orchestras required to perform Stockhausen’s Gruppen. On Tuesday night, a single performer will hold the vast floor. In an installation conceived by the Scottish conceptual artist Douglas Gordon, the French pianist Hélène Grimaud will perform a one-hour program of works inspired by water, as a controlled flood transforms the hall into a giant, glassy lake. In a slow creep, the water — all 122,000 gallons of it — will occupy nearly 33,000 square feet and, mirrorlike, turn the armory’s ceiling upside down, plunging it into what seems to be a bottomless, liquid-filled space. At least, that is the idea: “We will be working right up to the wire, because I do not know exactly what will happen,” Mr. Gordon said on Tuesday."

It took over 2 weeks, 864 Viroc boards, 7,000 blocks of Concrete, about a half-mile of Piping, and 122,000 gallons of Water to create a 27,648 square foot field of water for tears become... streams become.... Watch it all happen in 111 seconds.
