I’m a bit rusty after that social media break, so instead of a #tearsheettuesday I’ve got a #tearsheetthursday this week — from this month’s @baltmag I have a portrait of Saketh Sundar, one of this year’s Scripp’s Spelling Bee champions. I say “one of,” because this year there was an unprecedented 8-way tie at the top. As spelling goes, this year seemed more like a high pressure sporting event than ever. I met Saketh and his gracious parents at their home in Clarksville, MD, and it was fascinating to catch a behind-the-scenes look at his pre-bee prep sheets, memorizing the origins of various prefixes and suffixes (“may I have the country of origin please?”). Way more prep than I put into my foray into the good old Monterey County spelling bee in fifth grade, and it showed!
