"We're all scumbags, doll,"
@kyoruweekofficial Kyoru week prompt Tease please don’t mind my amateur editing lol.
After finishing up the nightly dishes and putting their son Hajime to bed, Tohru finds her husband Kyo in the living room with the lights off and the television on, relaxing with a movie. She walks over, standing behind the couch. “What are you watching?”
“It’s called the Grudge.”
“Like someone’s angry?”
He chuckles, “you could say that.” Kyo turns to look up at his wife. “I’d ask if you’d like to watch but...” he turns on a faux concern in his tone, “I don’t know— if you could handle it.”
“You’re just teasing me Kyo,” she raises her clenched fist in the air in a show of courage. “I can handle it! I’m much stronger now.”
“Are you sure... it’s a scary movie.”
‘Uh-oh!’ Tohru gulps, maybe she’d just bitten off more than she could chew. But now that she’d declared her willingness, it would be a loss to give in now. “I-I can handle scary movies.”
Again her husband chuckles, then pats the couch next to him and waves her over. Tohru sits down and while her mind was screaming, she held back her anxieties. ‘You can do this! It’s just a movie Tohru. Completely fake, nothing to worry about...’
Twenty minutes into the movie, Kyo side eyes his wife sitting there stiff as a board, and her eyes glued to the television. He’d been checking on her periodically, knowing how easily she gets spooked and was a bit surprised she was doing as well as she was. But that could also be a testament to her stubborn side. Tohru was clearly scared and just hiding it by stating still. Oh, he couldn’t resist.
Just as a scene of the ghost woman creeping through a monitor hits the screen, “boo!” He screams and jabs her side, not hard, but just enough to make the woman shriek and jump into his lap.
“Kyo—!”
“I’m sorry!” He couldn’t hold back his laughter. “It was just too good to pass up!”
“So... mean!” She pummels him with weak slaps on his arm. “You could have woken up Hajime!”
“I’m sorry, I’m sorry babe,” he bundles her closer, shifting her in his lap to make her more comfortable. Kyo still had an amused tone, but his softened voice was enough to settle her down. “Do you want me to change the movie?”
“No,” she mumbles, “You don’t need to stop it because of me.”
“Are you sure?” She nods her head against his chest. “Alright,” he kisses her forehead. “You can just stay where you are and I’ll protect you.”
For the rest of the movie, the couple watches quietly, and Kyo refrains from teasing his wife further. He was already proud of her for watching part of it, then sticking it out through the rest, even if she wasn’t actually paying attention. It was moments like this one that made him fall in love with Tohru over and over again. Just to have her close, nestled in his arms, the mother of his child, and giving him a life he’d never dreamed of having, he’d happily keep her in his lap for eternity.
When the credits start to roll, Kyo turns the television off, but takes a few minutes to relish the sleeping woman in his arms. She was so cute when she slept. Such an innocence that fueled his desire to protect her from the ills of this world. He kisses her forehead and gains a light sigh, then picks her up and carries her to bed. Tohru may scare easily by movie monsters, but this tough little woman was strong enough to handle a real life one and to Kyo that made her one of the toughest people in the world.
