wait, it’s tech genus, not tech genius? huh
T.G. Warwolf ———————————————— When a Level 4 or lower monster(s) is Special Summoned (except during the Damage Step): You can Special Summon this card from your hand. During the End Phase, if this card is in the Graveyard because it was destroyed on the field and sent there this turn: You can add 1 "T.G." monster from your Deck to your hand, except "T.G. Warwolf". ———————————————— Can Be Found In: Extreme Victory (EXVC-EN020), Legendary Collection 5D's Mega Pack (LC5D-EN209)
Although nowadays most Decks are all arround archetypes, that doesn't mean we cannot mix things arround them and other cards to create unique strategies. In some cases adding cards and effects outside a particular strategy can improve the theme considerably, often because they are lacking on options or their own and/or allowing them to cover certain flaws. So even if an archetype or theme have plenty of tools on their own, we shouldn't hold back on trying different things outside their core mechanics.
"T.G. Warwolf" belongs to an archetype all about Synchro Summons, but due the nature of its first ability gained a solid position as material in all sorts of Decks arround or outside the T.G. (Tech Genus) archetype. If a monster with Level 4 or lower is Special Summoned (Outside the Damage Step and rewardless of who causes it), "Warwolf" gains the option to Special Summon itself in return. This simple ability alone is what makes "Warwolf" a great push for all kinds of setups, but also carries and additional ability in case something goes wrong. In the case that "Warwolf" is destroyed and goes to the Graveyard, during that turn's End Phase we will gain the ability to look for a T.G. monster to add in our hand except copies of itself. This searching ability is indeed useful, but overall "Warwolf" stands out with its summoning ability to follow all kinds of monsters to prepare all sorts of goals together.
"Warwolf" is a solid example of a monster which, despite belonging to an archetype, has great support both inside and outside the T.G. theme to become quickly available in all sorts of builds. Although "Warwolf" cannot search copies of itself other T.G. monsters can do so under the same conditions, so if members such as "T.G. Striker" or "T.G. Cyber Magician" are defeated we can recover by searching for this monster during the End Phase. However, thanks to being a Beast-Warrior, "Fire Formation - Tenki" will be our main option to bring this creature to our hand immediately. When comes to its summon is clearly more than prepared thanks to its own effects, as can go from following other monsters in our hand like "Tin Goldfish" or "Tour Guide From the Underworld" as well late game options like Pendulum Summon or revival effects. Keep on mind that "Warwolf" can be summoned in response of opponent's summons, but due its poor stats will mostly be used to either defend against their actions and/or use its searching effect. In late game "Warwolf" is far from helpless thanks to its stats, as either is brought back to our hand by cards like "Recurring Nightmare" and "Dark Eruption" or is used as target of revival effects like "Crane Crane" and "Masked Chameleon".
A monster like "Warwolf" might not win many fights on its own, but will be mostly used as material of bigger summon thanks to its main effect. Although restricted by Levels "Warwolf" has not difficulties to Special Summon itself under all sorts of conditions and setups, with all kinds of early and late game summons to follow regardless of the Deck is added in. The main premise of T.G. is expensive Synchro Summons and "Warwolf" can aid in such purpose, but alternatively and depending of the theme is working with we can also aim for Rank 3 Xyz Summons and Link Summons without any difficulties. The searching effect of "Warwolf" might barely have any uses unless the opponent manages to disrupt our setups arround this monster or summoning it in response of the opponent's summons, but it might have a chance to look for other T.G. monsters if we use cards like "Creature Swap" and "TG1-EM1" to steal enemies while preparing "Warwolf" to be destroyed by our own hands. Otherwise, bringing "Warwolf" during the opponent's turn will be to work along "T.G. Wonder Magician", and since some archetype's monsters can add it to our hand during our End Phase is a good opportunity to Synchro Summon as the opponent's turn progresses.
Among the monsters in the T.G. archetype, "T.G. Warwolf" is in a very interesting position thanks to how its summoning effect works. While its stats won't make it efficient outside of a material role, the ability to arrive along all kinds of Special Summons assures we have atleast two monsters to setup bigger summons from early to late game. It also has the chance to arrive in response of opponent's summons, which although a riskful decission it can take advantage of its searching effect's condition to bait attacks and removal effects. Together with Graveyard options to keep its assistance prevalent in later turns, "T.G. Warwolf" is in a great position to work with all kinds of summons outside and inside its own archetype.
Personal Rating: A
+ Summons itself if a Level 4 or below monster is Special Summoned + Searches for another T.G. monsters at the end of a turn it was destroyed + Greatly supported from early to late game
- Below average stats to be used outside of a role as material - Its searching effect might have situational uses
People with dueling knowledge, I need your help again
A fair few of the Tech Genus have this as part of their anime effect:
When a Spell/Trap Card you control targets this card, you can halve this card's original ATK and DEF.
So what does this mean? You can halve the card's original ATK/DEF and then... What? The Spell/Trap still affects it?
I've been looking through Antinomy's decklist, but at first glance, there's no trap or spell that benefits from changed/lower attack values. I'm entirely unsure about the purpose of this effect. Someone help?
Took these fine fellows to a tournament last night. Didn't do too badly. Antimony would be proud.
