메타 (Meta) 구설수는 언제 끝나나?

메타의 구설수가 끊이지 않는다. 페이스북에서 메타로 회사명까지 바꾸고 뛰어든 메타버스 사업이 호락하지 않다.

메타버스는 메타의 미래먹거리다. 메타의 메타버스는 호라이즌 월드 (Horizon Worlds) 앱을 통해 접속할 수 있다. 접속 후 메타버스를 체험하기 위해서는 오큘러스 리프트S나 메타 퀘스트2와 같은 VR 헤드셋이 필요하다.

10일 현지시간 인도 테크 전문매체 테크2(Tech2)에 따르면, 메타 직원들조차 호라이즌 월드에 접속하지 않는 않는다고 한다. 메타에서 유출된 9월 15일자 내부 직원의 메모에는 다음과 같이 기술되어 있다. "우리 대부분은 호라이즌에 시간 낭비하지 않는다. 왜 그럴까? 좋다는 생각이 없어서다. 만드는 우리가 좋다고 생각하지 않으면, 유저들은 과연 좋아할까?" 15일 이후 유출된 또다른 내부직원 메모에도 호라이즌 월드에 대한 비판적 내용이 기술되어 있었다.

메타의 가장 큰 과제는 유저들이 VR헤드셋을 구매하게 만드는 거다. 오큘러스 리프트 S의 경우 시중가 70만원 이상이다. 메타퀘스트2는 오큘러스 리프트S 보다 조금 저렴하다.

메타의 메타버스를 체험하려고 유저들이 쉽게 지갑을 열수 있는 금액은 아니다. 그렇다고 메타에서 호라이즌 월드 가입자 모두에게 VR헤드셋을 무료로 제공할 수도 없는 실정이다.

VR헤드셋과 내부 문제뿐만 아니다. 현재 호라이즌 월드 유저들의 버그, 안정성에 대한 불평이 곳곳에서 표출되고 있는 중이다.
