My thoughts on the Bodega startup spectacle
Last week the startup Bodega took some heat by accused of being “out of touch with reality”. Silicon Valley has always been out of touch with reality. That much is not news. But what main street sees as a vice is actually what keeps Silicon Valley innovative since their inability to reflect upon the real world is what keeps them aiming for the stars and providing us main-streeters with ground breaking products.
Now that the accolades for Silicon Valley has been said, let us take a look at the actual problem of Silicon Valley startup culture.
From my personally startup experience, being in this industry about half a decade so far, think the main issue with Bodega is that the business is tailored towards an exit as opposed to the cultivation of a properly longstanding business. I can bet you that when the business plan for the Bodega business is made, both the founders and the investors looked to cashing out with an exit in a form of a buyout by a bigger company, like Amazon. So what they tried to do is to cater their business towards that goal, which is exactly the throwback is so bad, because it is such a half ass effort to make something meaningful.
And for that, shame on them, their advisors, and their investors for being so shortsighted.
