“erm, iskall? grian’s looking for you, he—” mumbo cuts himself off as his eyes land on the engineer, registering the sight in front of him.

iskall is seated in a chair, tinkering with something in his hands. he’s got an eyepatch over his left eye, which covers a good chunk of the left side of his face. to mumbo, it seems like his face is set in concentration, with the way his one visible eyebrow is furrowed.

mumbo, who had just been poking his head into the room, takes a step inside. he still isn’t quite sure how to approach grian’s right hand. iskall seems pretty keen on hating him (not that mumbo blames him, really), and the last thing mumbo wants is to make it worse.

“captain’s looking for me?” iskall asks, not looking up as mumbo comes over to him. standing beside him like this, mumbo can see a screwdriver in his hand, and he’s fiddling with his bionic eye. there’s different wires attached to it, which are attached to a monitor of sorts.

“oh uhm, he is, yes.” mumbo replies. “he said something about going over supplies for the upcoming heist? but uhm…” he trails off, eyes staring down at iskall’s hands. they’re very nice hands, honestly. “is your eye alright?”

“‘s fine. doing a check up on it since it’s been giving me headaches.” iskall grumbles in reply. “only doc’s tech, i tell ya.”

mumbo recalls what he knows of doc. he’s never met the man in person, he only knows the rumors. he wonders how much of them are true. “headaches?”

iskall mutters a curse as he struggles with the screwdriver. it seems like he’s having difficulty getting the plating off. “yeah. those usually mean something needs to be fixed up. grian or tango usually help me out, but they’re both busy. and impulse is taking care of our weapons.”

mumbo frowns a little and before he can think, “i could… help. if you want?” it’s an offer he makes anxiously, trying to resist the temptation to fidget in place. he’s spent so long with higher ups who’d scold him for even the slightest movement.

iskall’s hand stills, and he finally lifts his head up to meet mumbo’s gaze. for a moment, they stare at each other, and mumbo fears that he’s overstepped. he’s still new to the crew, still trying to find his footing among them. and iskall still hates him, oh god why did he offer his help?!

“could use an extra set of eyes and hands.” iskall eventually says, and mumbo’s racing thoughts slow. he looks at iskall with surprise as the man pulls a second chair around for him. “sit. you’re going to have to listen to me very carefully and do exactly as i say.”

mumbo doesn’t hesitate to listen, tugging the chair closer to his desk and sitting down.

later, grian finds the two of them in a conversation about the best way to remove a core from a mechanism, and most of it goes over his head. but he leans against the doorframe and smiles as he watches them.
