Kirbtober 2024 Companion Pieces - Week Four

Day 21: Rival

Keen readers may have known that in the old bios of Meet the Cast, Bandana Dee and Robobot Armor consider each other friendly rivals. But their rivalry used to be a bit more hostile, which reeks its ugly head at some point in the war...

At least, they get along very well nowadays, and once Robobot Armor got their body back it was friendly rivalry to the max. They both DEFINITELY attempt to beat the crap out of each other in the name of training. I bet they tie a lot.

Day 22: Ship/Hangout

I probably have never mentioned this, but every Valentines Day, Ribbon discreetly sends Kirby Valentines Day's Chocolate, with the vice versa happening on White Day. But of course, the two didn't want anyone to know about this *ahem* chocolate exchange. So the result is... they both had to sneak to make a beeline to the post office to give/receive their gift. It's like a spy movie except it's mundane as hell. But hey... since everyone CAN see how hard they are crushing about each other... I don't think this is necessary...

...they still do it discreetly tho. NOOOOOOO.

Day 23: Wish

Ah, Marx.

Poor guy.

So, regarding the NME - they love targeting those who feel weak to join them in hopes of, well, making use of them. Noddies are certainly included (I follow game canon for these f^ckers) and Marx's family are... uh...

A powerhungry scientist who experimented himself with Scarfy blood and a rich woman who supplies Nightmare with her funds are certainly, uhm, a freaking problem. Marx was made into a guinea pig who knows nothing but whatever propaganda his family feeds him regarding Nightmare and how they want Marx to impress or even surpass him. This is what led to events of Milky Way Wishes.

Fortunately, Marx's in a better place now...

...alive, you idiots! I didn't kill him! He's now owner of a prank shop in Dreamland!

Day 24: Another Dimension

Halcandrans aren't necessary native from Halcandra. They are just named Halcandrans because... they all live there. Apparently they were scattered throughout Halcandra somewhen after the big war between them and the Jambastians.

By the way, did you know Magolor isn't fully evil in this AU initially - a series of misunderstandings and curses led to the tricky scenario that is Return to Dreamland, but that's a story for another day...

Day 25: Epilogue

A drawing based on this doodle page and this part of the story. Yes, this is kinda a redraw? Look, I had to whip this very quickly, I got tired...

But hey... they are happy... at least... reunited, but at what cost...?

Day 26: Moon

Kabuki ability, eh. We did give lore regarding this ability in two entries of last year's Kirbtober, but I suppose some additions are worth throwing in.

So, when I said it was the GSA dividing the power into scrolls... it was the Moon Warriors. Wait, so what are Star Warriors then? Well, in this AU Star Warriors are not magical or anything, in fact there are Sun and Moon Warriors, but perhaps that part of the GSA's a discussion for another day... so let's just know that the Moon Warriors are a different division from the Star Warriors.

I suppose it makes sense for the Kabuki ability to be associated with the moon outside this information in mind as well - Hypernova has the sun, Technician has the star (which makes it technically the leftover), so...

Day 27: Control

This is not a real in-universe PSA, but I'm very sure the team is tired as sh^t regarding brainwashing stuff, especially when some of their allies are PRIME brainwashing material (LOOKING AT YOU, DEDEDE). And within the team itself, 2 of them got possessed before and one got their body yoinked to do things they wouldn't do once. So uh. Safe to say they HATE this.

Kirbtober 2023 Day 29: Last Battle Ability

No one knows who created the Star Rod - variations on who made it vary from people to people, from the Ancients to the first members of the GSA to some other civilization sick of Nightmare's shenanigans, but everyone agreed it was made to deal with Nightmare, who was becoming an extremely annoying threat... but it became incomplete due to it being made in a rush. But it still proves to be one hell of an insane weapon against Nightmare anyway, so the creators had no choice but to find an isolated planet, created the Fountain of Dreams in order to power it up while the creators are away, all to hide it from Nightmare. And to the surprise of absolutely no one at this point, guess which planet that was now? Planet Popstar, of course. Thanks to the Fountain of Dreams charging the Star Rod for so long, its influence spread through the area, resulting in the area of Dreamland constantly having good dreams. In all honesty, the rod was made using Dream Matter magic, of course something like this happens. The funny thing? None of the Dreamland citizens KNOW about the Fountain of Dreams. None, not even Meta Knight knows, all they heard was this legend of the Star Rod being a viable weapon to defeat Nightmare. In fact, the reason Kirby can summon it by inhaling the Warp Star was because the supposed 'final bout' happened in his dream, which means Nightmare did a whoopsie and tried to demoralize the puffball in his own turf. Good job, Nightmare. Fortunately, when Nightmare was defeated, a part of his soul that was hidden somewhere manages to revive him, and he sets off to find the Star Rod... and by coincidence, Dedede was going to look into the legend as well. Of course, it's real, and Dedede was extremely surprised when he knew it really wasn't some random legend... oh, and Nightmare's ready to kick his ass, so he acted fast and just sealed the sorcerer before spreading the parts of the rod to random locations and even people he knows he can trust - one of them being Meta Knight. Of course, this causes mass confusion, as people lost their good dreams and just can't sleep. Thanks to Kirby's impulsivity and Tiff and Tuff mainly still being suspicious of Dedede, this entire plan goes into the trash can and Kirby ends up fighting Nightmare with the real Star Rod anyways. After all of this scuffle was solved and all the people who got pulled into this made sure that Nightmare is truly, absolutely f^cking dead, everyone in Dreamland was made aware of the Fountain of Dreams and Star Rod's existences. Since then, the Fountain of Dreams became a rather sacred ground, and the Star Rod became Kirby's first legendary weapon that he wielded that isn't the Galaxia. Kirby still sometimes enter the place himself just to sit there... doing nothing... sometimes taking the Star Rod off its place for a moment... Probably looking at the stars. Who knows what he really does...

Drawing the Rest of the Copy Ability Stars, Round 1!

I wasted a lot on this... so let's get this show on the road!

Yes, there are oh-so-many abilities that are canon in Technician Uprising, but HAL doesn't bother making ability stars for them. And so, as an AU owner... I have a full reign to design all of them! I am going to comment on each of them as well! Click down below to learn more about the process of making each star and what I think about the ability overall.

From top left to bottom right:

Balloon - The first one I draw overall (and the first ability fully illustrated, though I wanted to design Light fully first). This ability really just appeared in Canvas Curse, which is canon to TU, and due to a totally not secret plan of mines, I had to turn this into a full-fledged ability. Honestly. It just existed for Canvas Curse, so I hope the revamp moveset will give it a bit more versatility outside just "haha easier to control ball go brr".

Light - The MOST underused and underrated ability, FIGHT ME. God I love the concept of Light being used as a power but MAN. BIGGEST OOF FOR THIS ABILITY. Literally exists as early as in Adventure and was left for the slumps, never to be adapted. Watch as I make this a permanent use ability. I had to check the illustration of this ability in Adventure to get the icon.

Metal - Once again taken here due to a due to a totally not secret plan of mines. Honestly this is just Stone but Stone Change is always on. But I'll figure out what to do with it. And no, we're not using the scroll's additional ability, that's just Ball (which is also here in this round). I really just ctrl+c ctrl+p the icon from Squeak Squad directly.

Missile - Oh I would make this a Technician Mode... IF JET DOESN'T HAVE F^CKING MISSILE SALVO, making this ability UTTERLY OBSOLETE. Thanks HAL, but okay. Honestly it's pretty... eh. Maybe I haven't seen it too much in action. Also redrawing the Missile was. Hm. Okay I guess. I struggled setting up stroke thickness and setting since I'm limited to two colors and I don't want it to look weird, but the flame exhaust effect on the back is nice.

Bubble - I would make this a Technician Mode but at the same time I'm not so sure, it's already perfect enough to, you know, not change much... while the point of the modes is to EXACTLY twist the abilities' skills in a sense (at least for Technician. Idk. Most of Robobot Armor's ones are just normal attacks with bigger damage™ and that's it). Thank you Squeak Squad icons for saving me once again. Btw, Animal aside, this is my favorite ability in Squeak Squad. Though I'd change it to just trapping opponents in bubbles in my AU perhaps. Idk, turning them immediately to ability stars sounded... OP?

Ghost - Hahahaha spooky. I would also make this a Technician Mode... except I have an OC with Technician + Ghost with a rather complicated backstory, so, uh, no. I tried drawing a ghost, ends up just being frustrated because the proportions aren't right, but hey I did it!

Freeze - I cheated from Air Ride. Anyways, I guess I remember a Kirby gijinka artist (KirbyTardos, if I recall that username) who noted this might be more focused on defense, which I'll happily steal. Sir if you see this, I hope you're doing well, I should really check your comic series. Anyways... this one was supposedly fused with Ice nowadays, but whatever, it can co-exist I suppose. Trying to make it fancy but ends up giving up and settled for this.

Paint - Uhhhh... Isn't this just Artist? Nope! Decided that Artist and Paint are for two different specialties just like Ice and Freeze, in this case Artist is for precision while Paint is for R A N G E. I think their style should be differentiate too, with Artist you have the user having much cleaner, detailed art that needs thinking into it, while Paint is just. Graffiti. Go crazy. Go insane. Spread 387493743 splashes of paint to the wall of your neighbours!! I tried to recreate the icon in Super Star Ultra, but then I realized it looked wrong every single time and after more tweaking I just leave it like this. Could've done it better. Maybe I will revisit it someday.

Animal - Another one I could've done better I guess. Stealing again from Squeak Squad's icons! Tried adding a claw mark. Didn't work. F^ck. But oh well! ANYWAYS I LOVE THIS ABILITY HOW DID HAL DIDN'T ADD THIS TO FORGOTTEN LAND??? NOOOOO!!

Magic - Insert that one song from Milgram here. I love Deco*27. Anyways. Went simple with this one. Three cards and a magic hat that I stole from Squeak Squad. I also stole the colors of the illustration as we already have abilities with black and white ability stars and I doubt I can change em much to make it distinct. Yeah, yet once again taken here due to a due to a totally not secret plan of mines.

Ball - Ballin huh? You guessed it, it is, yet again, once again taken here due to a due to a totally not secret plan of mines. I don't think this one has to change a lot, it's just so goofy. I like its vibes, but I bet it will be a pain in the ass to use properly in-game somehow. Shoutout for Nightmare in Dreamland's little ability illustration for this. Also it's hard to design the ball icon itself so I went with a beach ball.

Laser - I kinda want this to be a Technician Mode, so we'll see this one with great interest! I wanted other colors but the illustration artworks only gave me colors that already exist or too close to other ability star's colors... then I realize that not all copy abilities have to share their outfit colors with the ability star, because Wing existed - it doesn't have blue but the star's blue-ish anyways! So I decided to go for pink, the color of the laser beam that was shot in the illustration!

Iron - Yes this is canon. Yes I will have to revamp this to avoid this being just Stone 2.0 but with deflect system, and in fact, I have made a full moveset from this long time ago! It's now a construct creating ability, creating simple things such as pillars and stuff. Still retains the "deflection with staff" technique and the one that reminds you of Stone Change... but I made the latter time-restricted rather than "as long as you hold it you're invisible" spiel. Anyways. The ability hat, as well as some iron blocks to hammer it to the point that HEY THIS ABILITY'S ENTIRE THING IS IRONS and not just "snek????"

Top - Went with green because that color is rare for copy ability stars, THANK GOD. It's also one that I purposely made canon because it's funny! Also young me already made a full-fledged moveset for this, thank f^ck. Tried to make it look like the top is tipping and gliding. And still spinning. Kinda looks smooth me thinks.

Baton - Oh god the ability's design itself is kinda mid imo but I'LL REDESIGN THAT JUST YOU SEE. Anyways. This is another one in the "so underused it hurts" category. For some reason the ability is one-use in the anime!!! Wow!! F^ck it!! Young me made a full-fledged moveset so WE'LL GO BY THAT THANKS. I went with pink... again... Or red... uh... I guess it's just pale dark pink, I used color picker on the staff don't ask. Tried to bring more of a Suplex vibe with a puffball holding the staff as if spinning it. S p e e n. I like the concept of the ability though, Motion Manipulation baby!

We might have more abilities on the go, but we'll see. I might move on to redrawing all Technician Modes after this. I'll also update the spreadsheet eventually with all these damn stars WAHOO.

Welcome to the City of Sound!

I decided to do a drawing since it's been a while. I know. I procrastinate on fanfics but at least have this. Did the buildings in FireAlpaca and used Inkscape for everything else including the white jagged outlines for each building.

Drawing Kirby with the Wheel Technician Mode was painful, btw, so have him on his own:

Lore underneath the keep reading part below ^^ (may include spoilers)

Even after events of Planet Robobot, well, some of Popstar still got permanently mechanized. We'll get to that later, that's a story for another day as why it happened, but the thing is, after all that war, the Nullarians were basically homeless(tm).

So, at the end, they ended up staying on that permanently mechanized land. Yeah, it's a pretty small island, but they managed. They ended up turning it into Access Area, divided in areas in a similar vein to Popstar when it got mechanized, but the differences come from the names of each areas and their territory.

In the heart of the Access Area, lies Rhythm Route, the biggest area of them all. It's just the same as the old Rhythm Route, and has became a bustling city ever since, just like cities on Earth (Earth isn't important in this AU unfortunately, it's on a different galaxy altogether, but still), but more advanced. Kirby likes going there, usually to explore the urban area.

Though, he loves rollerskating in there, and fortunately, his variation of the Wheel Mode is just that. Sometimes, you can see him weaving his way in and out of smaller routes of the city, almost like a mouse...

You all reminded me of them, more than I realized

Wow, 12 AM thoughts stronger than I thought.

Today, I somehow realized one sad thing about Meta Knight and how he could've seen Team Starstruck in general. Poor man couldn't get a break.

So, you know how this AU does have elements from the anime? Yeah. You know Knuckle Joe's dad and Garlude? Yeah.

Well, I could imagine them as basically the three amigos of the GSA. Who says Star Warriors can't travel in groups? They do (hence, Team Starstruck can get away with making a team). It would only make sense that Meta was a happier individual in his old days and things were getting bleaker thanks to the Nightmare War.

Which... becomes a cruel foil of irony.

Meta Knight saw Kirby as a reflection of himself. The two wars were different - he faced the demon beasts, his student faced the nullarians. His threat had gone intergalactic, his student's (to most of their knowledge) was just one single planet. Both of them were so close to losing hope, yet there's this tiny group they can always count on as their final beacon of hope.

...do you get what I am saying here?

Meta Knight couldn't help but see his two former teammates in Kirby's own. He couldn't help but see Garlude's motherly yet hardworking self in Bandana. He couldn't help but notice how Jecra and Robobot are both pretty hotheaded when the situation calls for it. Garlude cooks for the team, so did Bandana, Jecra stays awake to keep guard, so did Robobot back then, Jecra bit the dust first, and Robobot was initially pronounced dead after the war, Garlude would do anything including passing on Galaxia to Meta himself before her death to complete the mission, and Bandana would similarly do anything if it's to protect his teammates or the king.

Meta just... couldn't get those former teammates out of his mind whenever Team Starstruck interacts with each other. The team always celebrated each other's birthday, and so did his long ago. The team didn't want to stay apart for too long, so did his own team. And Meta clung to his two teammates for a comfort he may never see in the war, something he learns Kirby did with his two teammates too.

The difference was that while Team Starstruck didn't come back unscathed for better or for worse, they still in a sense got their happy ending: no one dies, everyone is kinda alright, and they are still adventuring to this day. But Meta's team... We know what happened.

He lost everyone. He never got to see any of them again, because they are all dead. He was the sole survivor. And now, here he is, the only one teaching the new generation.

Is he sad? Yes. Is he ever gonna admit it? No. But will Kirby and the rest of the team pry that out so he could stop hiding his actual feelings? If they were all to know, f•ck yeah! They all would give the old man a hug.

Perhaps there were times when Meta, after a rough day of working, goes to Team Starstruck and just... train them, and watch their budding relationship grow. At times, Meta hated the feeling of slight jealousy as he witnessed his student getting something he couldn't have: living old friends. But at the same time, he was happy. Kirby had comrades he can always fall back on when he's stuck or distressed.

His only wish was that history wouldn't repeat completely, and he didn't have to witness his student losing his teammates just like himself...

And that's why he can be considered someone harsh on Team Starstruck. Meta couldn't imagine the heartbreak that would hit any of the three if one of them or all of them just... died. He is keeping an eye out for them so that they don't get into too much trouble, even if fate just loves trolling Kirby and gaslight him into situations he didn't account for.

I guess, in a sense, Team Starstruck is his greatest second chance. To make things right and keep all of them alive is perhaps his best interest. Sure, he didn't like how Kirby can be rebellious towards the traditional methods of the GSA. He shook his head every time Bandana thinks lowly of himself for not being able to catch up because his friends were born 'luckier'. He gets annoyed whenever Robobot uses foul words all the time to express themselves. But... He wouldn't trade the three for anything. He genuinely wants to see them succeed, and that's one of the reasons why he stayed.

At least, even if he 'fails' his friends... He wouldn't fail his students, right...?

Guide to Technician Ability Modes Reboot - Bomb Mode

Navigation: < 03 Ice | 04 Bomb | 05 ??? >

"I didn't expect landmines to be used here, I'm going to be real! But... why?"

Skill List:

Package Tap - Activates the remote's ability to generate landmines, opening the slider slot. From this, Kirby just needs to pop out the landmine and place it anywhere. Pressing the plus button will generate another landmine as long as Death Detonation isn't used yet. Death Detonation - Closes the slider slot, before using the side button to activate the landmines' energy generating system, causing them to build up reaction to explode. The landmines can hold up 15 seconds at maximum before exploding if left by their own, but pressing the cross button can explode them early.

Note:

-Ability Modes that Kirby has may differ from Robobot Armor in terms of skillsets and weaponry, as both are considered separate

Yeah... let's just hope some implications won't pop out so hard I get cancelled.

But yeah! The idea of it being landmines are so intriguing. I love how more specialized these modes are, making them branch out more than Robobot Armor's ones in general.

Let's see what mode is next! All the transportation ones will be last though, unfortunate, but hey! Fun!

Guide to Technician Ability Modes Reboot - Ice Mode

Navigation: < 02 Sword | 03 Ice | 04 Bomb >

"I want to apologize in advance if things get... chilly. Hehehe..."

Skill List:

Snowstorm - Releases an icy blast of air. Can be held for a long time to stack up.

Chill Ring - Causes the fan to pulse out a ring of cold air, which slightly freezes anyone that gets hit by it. More accurate and pinpointed than Snowstorm, but deals half the damage.

Frost Flight - Puts fan below and turns it on to push self up, enabling flight to go mid-air. It cannot go extremely high, but it leaves ice trails wherever the flight goes.

Conditioning Cooldown - Places the fan against an ally's skin, before turning the fan on at the mildest setting to cool them down. If left long enough, it leaves a patch of ice that slightly heals the ally before melting on its own, unless there's heat from the environment speeding up the melting process.

Note: -This mode can also be gained from attacks/enemies/objects that grants the Freeze ability due to simplification system

-Ability Modes that Kirby has may differ from Robobot Armor in terms of skillsets and weaponry, as both are considered separate

Again, just matching colors with the original Ice Mode. This is my favorite concept ever outside of the transportation-based modes... which I am very afraid to redraw, so expect both of them to be at the very last ones!

At this point I'm just taking requests from friends on which mode they want to see first, so this might not gonna be even by alphabetical order :3
