How do these advances make you feel? Terrified, excited, unaffected...

Why?
Just like the example in Second Machine Age, of the computer that repeatedly lost to the Jeopardy reigning champions, but eventually won, it’s a bit of a disappointment for the human spirit or mind not being able to ‘conquer all.’ The examples of the clumsiness of robotics or the inability of technology to trump human intelligence and accumulated skill is disheartening. Because spiritually and emotionally it’s preferable to believe in humanity’s ‘top of the food chain’ status. We are organic computers at one level with our senses and the CPU of our brain but in the arts of poetry or creativity or intuition it’d be nice to believe there is an essence or quality that can’t be captured and reproduced.
How do we weigh the potential benefits against the potential costs?
In one sense, strategy and suppositions, like chess, seems to take experience and know how. But as far as data crunching and probabilities of calculation, as computers were originally designed for, taking the burden off humans or challenging their productivity and capacity, hence their inherent value is a very slippery slope and fluid line. I’m intrigued, because if harnessed correctly this power could potentially produced unimagined results. But knowing the cynical history of humanity with war, profit and greed. We most likely will not use these discoveries or powers for good necessarily. It could have a potential, like the Dr. Otto Octavius, of Marvel comics to spiral into a nihilistic state of anarchy.

At first glance, this seems sensible and fair, but then my immediate instinct after that is potential for abuse and unfairness.
Why?
Predictive risk assessment seems reasonable enough, I’m not criminal justice expert, but there must be levels or tiers of criminal, like an end-user, beginner to power user. And the saying, the best indicator of future behavior is past behavior has a certain credence to it, as far as work history or productivity in the work place so I’d imagine there is a rule for this as well.
How do we weigh the potential benefits against the potential costs?
There is much grey area that should be accounted for as well. Having taken a quantitative reasoning course in sociology in my undergraduate degree, the recurrence and patterns of suicide could be measured by economic and historical factors, but that was for general trends and numbers. The individual can get lost in those statistics, even categorizing correctly what was classifiably a suicide as cause of death. When it comes to incarceration, personally if I were an inmate I’d not be too trusting nor pleased with this approach.
When it comes to moral or ethical areas, or even subjective decision making, like grading criteria done by statistics or an informed and experienced teacher, who is best to ‘judge’? Not to imply humans aren’t sometimes corrupt or unreasonable, and not by default best to just but who watches the watcher then? When political agendas enter into the game of predictive assessment, how is that kept in check?
When an institutionalized system has to bid a vendor to handle this the choice could affect the outcome. Just as it’s been shown over time, that standardized testing is skewed towards certain cultures and socio-economic background, how is this supposed to be any different? It’s like the 360 degree review at work, depending on the competitiveness or like or dislike of the feedback the results may be unfair. Fosque for instance has changed his ways, but alcoholism is a disease with unpredictable outcomes, so his DUIs could or could not recur. If you add on the question of the motivation for arrest, you could be building data and predicting on a false basis of an incorrect law enforcement office. It becomes a tangled mess.
Presentation of numbers and statistics can always be skewed or adjusted, for example look at advertising and testimonials, etc. How could this automized system retain an objective stance when that is so difficult as is? I’m not entirely against it, I see it’s added value and necessity, but it’s a rubber to the road model. I don’t think you can realistically predict how it will work out. It could be an ethical debacle or a needed streamlining. Possibly it could go either way.

At some point, there will be casualties of progress, like the Second Machine Age discusses the Industrial Revolution. London was one of the worst offenders with terrible air pollution and abuses of child labor and now they have reformed to the complete opposite, remedied all of these concerns. Great progress if it is better at paying attention to all interactions at once, but knowing the error margin of technology or programming or electricity. Maybe these driverless cars should retain their steering wheels as well in case of emergency.
