“Is that enough blankets?”

“I can’t breathe,” Jamie answered from under a pile of blankets. 

“Maybe one more?” Colin asked. 

If Jamie could move his arms, he would’ve thrown the last one off. “I’m fine, really fellas.”

“You were shivering,” Isaac said. 

“Barely,” Jamie defended. “And you took all me clothes.”

“They were soaked. We all changed.”

“Why am I the only one under a mountain of blankets?” 

“We made you go for a run, and now you’re cold so we’re going to fix it boyo.”

Jamie smiled and tried to shift. Failed. “I’m fixed.”

Isaac disagreed. “One more blanket.”

“It’s not the flu.”

They might’ve believed him if a sneeze wasn’t an exclamation point on his denial. 

“Maybe we should all go home, just in case?”

Sam had said it so nicely, and Jamie was trying to be a good teammate, weren’t he? He should listen to Sam. Sam was smart. And maybe he was a bit knackered. Just a bit. Jamie didn’t argue when Sam tucked a blanket around him, or made him tea or even when he tried to feed him soup.

And the next week, when Sam got the flu, Jamie took care of him, too.

“Oh wow! I think Dauphine really likes you, Jamie!” Phoebe clapped happily. “She doesn’t like Uncle Roy.”

“All animals love me,” Jamie said, picking up the cat and smirking at Roy. “She must know he’s a grumpy old twat.”

Roy hissed at the cat, and she jumped from Jamie’s arms, scampering off to hide somewhere from Roy. 

“Uncle Roy!” Phoebe scolded. 

“What’d you do that for?” Jamie whined, hands on his hips.

Phoebe copied him. “Yeah, what’d you do that for Uncle Roy?

“Yeah, Uncle Roy! You’re jealous she likes me better than you. Cat’s got good taste is all.”

On Christmas Day, Jamie stumbles into a time loop. As he struggles to find the message from the universe as he spends time with his mum, forgives his father and professes his love to Keeley and Roy separately, each day still ends in tragedy. Will he (with the help of Coach Beard and eventually the team) ever make it to Boxing Day?

“Are you sure this is a good idea?”

“No.”

Sam frowned. “But won’t Coach Kent be mad at us?”

“Only if we get caught,” Jamie smiled and wiggled his eyebrows. 

“How did you even get a key to his room?”

“Told the front desk I was his boyfriend and wanted to surprise him.”

“You told them Jamie Carragher was your boyfriend, isn’t he married?”

“Don’t know. Now help me swap out his shampoo with the colour-depositing one.”

“Are you sure this isn’t too far?” Sam asked. 

“He called Coach an unprepared, inexperienced amateur manager. We could do worse.”

“Okay. Fair.”

Bang. Bang. Bang. 

“Open the fucking door, Jamie. This ain’t no joke. You’re gonna make me angry, just let me in.”

The door rattled, jarring Jamie’s back pressed against the vibrating wood. His hands trembled in his lap, knuckles bloody, jaw aching. He had locked himself in the bathroom in a panic, but now he was trapped. 

Jamie tried to slow his breathing, but his chest shuddered with each heaving breath. 

“Come on, son,” James slurred. “Just come out. I won’t be mad, promise.”

Jamie only had to wait, James would pass out soon enough. He hoped. 

Bang. Bang. Bang.

It wasn’t supposed to happen like this. 

Jamie had stared up at Roy Kent on his wall, across the dressing room, across the pitch, the first time Roy hugged him was supposed to be in celebration, not as he cried, not as all the walls he carefully built crumbled with one strong hand between his shoulder blades. 

They were at Wembley; it wasn’t supposed to happen this way. 

But it had, and it was with frantic desperation that Jamie gripped Roy back and finally succumbed, letting Roy keep him together while all his hate at his father ebbed from him.

beginnings

day 1 of the @tedlassocreativecorner February daily drabbles challenge

Jamie hadn't slept.

He had tossed and turned and stared at the unfamiliar white ceiling in the too soft bed until his eyes stung and his head ached. He looked at the clock, and 4:00 AM stared accusingly back at him like a bad omen. It was Jamie’s first day at AFC Richmond; he couldn’t afford to fuck it up. 

“Jamie Tartt. Here to save your sorry arses from relegation.”

Roy Kent stared back at him, the same stare that greeted him day and night, bad days and good, in Manchester. He didn’t say anything back this time, either.
