If you were at a horseshoe and saw a dealer crying and asked if they were ok 1. No tf you did not and 2. I’m fucking. Fine. My brain just decided to write the scene where Roy dies. On the fucking floor????

I’ve written poems where I’m like “yeah this is going to ruin someone’s week” never had a fic that felt like that before. Before this one. Oops.

That scene where Jamie punches out his dad is so intense. It's crazy - you can see which of the lads have been there, and which of the lads have good enough family that the tableau is a somber reminder of how good they have it - or at least how much better they have it at home than others. You can see Nate feeling grateful for his dad in comparison - you can see Danny being grateful that he has no point of comparison for a family life like that. And then Ted - he didn't have a home life like that, but you can see the complicated nature of his feelings all over his face. He didn't have a bad dad - until he didn't have a dad anymore at all. It's hard to pick a way to feel about the whole topic when you have feelings that level of complicated.

Okay how could this be anything other than Jamie Tartt, who has had Roy's poster on his bedroom wall since he was a sexy little baby™ ?

This is a melancholy one focused on Jamie's youth and teen years, real nitty gritty on how Sr was a fuckhead and Mummy was courted by Simon and Jamie had big feelings about everything but still wanted his da's approval even if it felt bad and conditional. And through it all, there was Roy Kent on his wall, resplendent in Chelsea colors and his hair a free mane of curls.

Follows canon with Jamie crushed his idol won't give him the time of day and then they're growing friendship until Roy and Jamie get brave enough to start dating and get married and for Roy's present to Jamie, Roy lets Jamie pick through his storage unit of memorabilia until they find another poster.

Then Roy recreates the pose and then they fuck about it.

Jamie's always relied on Roy and now Roy's pledged to be there for him for the rest of their lives and vice versa. Jamie's on top of the world and the best thing is, he has Roy there with him.

Starts as a 2k concept that balloons to 19k and takes me six months and untold agonies to get through. Soundtrack is exclusively Stevie Nicks and Tina Turner and one (1) Madonna song.

The second to last episodes of S1 and S2 of Ted Lasso really bookend the Roy/Keeley relationship and perfectly demonstrate why they were never going to work long-term. When Roy is feeling insecure about the end of his football career in S1, Keeley's immediate reaction is to say, "God. I think men who feel sorry for themselves are so sexy...And if you start telling me how hard it is playing a game for a living, I think I might come." Sure, when Roy elaborated that he thinks football is more than just a game to him/all he's ever known/who he is/all he is, Keeley asked Phoebe to describe Roy, and Phoebe nailed it by rattling off all the things she loves about her Uncle that have nothing to do with football. Still, it does stand out to me that Keeley herself doesn't offer any similar reassurances of her own in that scene.

Contrast that with Keeley feeling nervous about her Vanity Fair interview at the end of S2 (and also, insecure about her own career taking off as she prepares to start her own PR firm.) Roy tries to reassure her by saying it can't be more nerve-racking than the time she jumped out an airplane topless for an advert. And when Keeley says, "But this isn't that. It was about how I looked. This is about me. I had to do an interview, like a real interview. They asked me about my thoughts and my feelings and my goals for the future. When people read this article, they're gonna see me. See the real me." And Roy's immediate reaction is to say, "The real you is fսcking amazing. And now the whole world is gonna get to see that."

Ouch.

I think Roy always knew deep down that the feelings were stronger on his end, and that no matter how long he and Keeley managed to make it work for, he'd always be giving more than he got, at least in terms of emotional intimacy. I'll never forgive S3's writing for acting like he was crazy for breaking up with Keeley when he was actually making a totally reasonable decision based on his own experiences within that relationship.
