Final Spreads | Put into context | Evaluation
Visual Thinking : In Context was a very different project for me. I wanted to really push myself. I don't like to use so much colour so I wanted to make sure I used it effectively but more than usual in this unit to communicate with the reader and be a supporting factor for the way the text is read. I focused mainly on how the audience would perceive the text and how it’ll sound in their subconscious. The main way I did this was by refining down the tones in _____’s Voice and Italicising or Bolding the text to make it speak sarcastically or raise the voice/tone to the reader. Another big influence in my work was the initial research I carried out on the specific topic. I found from this why people saw it as terrifying - and it allowed me to have a better understanding and how to tackle my illustrations as I now too had a image in my head of how I feel about the topic therefore helped me communicate this concern better.
My project changed significantly throughout this 4 week period. I focused on refinement within my timeframe and chose to tackle what would be most effective within the time limit I had. I chose to go with a simplistic illustrative style as I thought this is best fitting for the amount of time I had to work with. This lead to me having enough time to rework the illustrations multiple times until I was happy with how they not only looked but also communicated with the text. One of the biggest changes that my project went through was the colour scheme. I took from constructive criticism that my work didn't seem extremely coherent at first glance due to the colours being different on each spread. This was something I put a lot of thought and research into and eventually found a scheme called “Outrun” which is extremely relevant to the talk I chose (explained in more depth in my process book). All of my mock-ups and trails are in my sketchbook and my blog. I chose to track my development this way because from the last project I found screen colours and print outs are completely different - with my using both the blog and my sketchbook you can also see my development of testing how my spreads print and where I chose to change colours etc.
This project has been pretty enlightening in different ways. I have shown myself I can actually work very colourful and push myself into doing design that I’m not that confident within and keeping at it until I’m happy. I also know more about the actual topic. I had no clue about how much Artificial Intelligence was advancing; nor how bad our society was for being so sucked up in technology - it was very thought provoking.
However, Theres a few things I think I could do better:
Perspective Illustration
Adobe Illustrator - I Found areas I’m not great at.
In Comparison, This is what I’m most proud of in this project:
Perseverance
Use of colour scheme
Detail and attention to how text and typography is perceived
In total; I think I have made myself quite proud with this project. As I managed to take feedback given in both my tutorials and my crit I believe I worked on every aspect pointed out to me - even if I did misspell the main title for three weeks - I tried my best to work on some feedback given to me in my past editorial marked feedback which was to pay attention to inconsistencies throughout the spreads. I tackled this by making a list of every font, PT size and font family (bold, itlaisised) that I used and where and why I used them to correct this consistency issue. I also carried through something I got positive feedback on from my last project by creating and documenting my design process in detail - even if it felt insignificant. Finally, I think that I followed my direction established at the start of the project effectively.
