I don't know who needs this today, but in case it's you:

Read a marvellously grousey letter from Teddy to a friend of his, written July 1912, between his being invalided out of the Terra Nova Expedition (March 1912) and going back with the ship to discover Scott was dead (January 1913).

In it he complains of Birdie brownnosing Scott, claims Scott's losing the Pole to Amundsen is retribution for Scott's ill-treatment of himself, and seemingly unconsciously implicates himself – he had started planning his own expedition before joining Scott's – in the statement that private polar expeditions are all about the leader's ego.

And he signs off with "Hilda and I would be delighted to have a wild 'binge' on the town if we can arrange one."

To think some people find history boring!

Actress Anna Neagle takes a shooting lesson from Admiral Sir Edward Evans during the institution of the London (CD) Region Rifle Association. Evans was a Regional Commissioner for Civil Defence. Neagle scored 42 out of 50 in her first try.

At the talk tonight, Anne Strathie was talking about the different theories about why Amundsen had That Painting of Oates and one of them was that Teddy Evans gave it to him as he referred to Amundsen as a friend, spoke fluent Norwegian and introduced him etc.

I wonder why Teddy Evans felt so compelled to underline Titus Oates had big eyes. I mean anytime he mentioned Titus's eyes he wrote about "big, kind brown eyes". Teddy, how many times were you staring into them?
