We often hear #worklifebalance - there is 1.6 million tags for that phrase on Instagram. But are we called to balance? Or are we called to excellence (do not read perfection)? And to be excellent are there times when imbalance is necessary? I submit there are times when you have to grind for work to be excellent - there are also times when you need to be all in with your family or friends. I think about the time when my husband had a triple bypass surgery and many complications that left him in the hospital for weeks. At that time, I was not called to a work-life balance. I was all in to making sure my husband stayed alive - and I did not give myself the option of work-life balance - I needed to be all in to be an excellent caregiver. I say all this hopefully to demystify the idea that work-life balance should be the goal. I needed imbalance to make sure my husband got the care he needed. Dictionary.com defines balance as “a state of equilibrium” and an “equal distribution of weight [or] amount.” I don’t know why we perpetuate the idea that and “equal distribution of weight” placed on work, family, worship, friendships, and the other things that make up our lives is a goal and if we don’t have it we somehow need to be doing everything to seek it out. I believe I am called to “do [everything] for the glory of God” (1 Corinthians 10:31) and I think that can often mean imbalance in certain priorities and I think that is ok! I know for me to pursue anything excellently I must focus sometimes to the exclusion of other things but I am learning to get more comfortable being out of balance to do things with excellence.
