T.E. Dikty (ed.) - The Best Science Fiction Stories and Novels 1956 (1956) A pretty good collection of short stories with a quite long novella at the end. As always these are a bit hit and miss and several of the stories here are pretty forgettable. However, the big highlight here goes to the original short story version of Walter M. Miller Jr.'s A Canticle for Leibowitz which would later become a widely influential novel still in print up until today. Other highlights are stories by Robert Bloch, Algis Budrys, Cordwainer Smith and Mark Clifton. As a selection of stories the Judith Merrill collection is a better one if if it is missing the Leibowitz story from this. As an added bonus we get a good summation of the year in Science Fiction by the editor right at the start and a good and useful list of all the publications in the field at the end of the volume. Worth taking a look at.
