I'm pretty sure the answer is "yes," but just to be sure: you get a bigger cut off the sale from Itchio than Steam, right? So we should buy from Itchio if possible?

i do, yes! as a partner i don't believe i'm allowed to say exactly what steam's cut is, but, well, everyone already knows what it is, and it's bigger than itch's default 10% cut. on itch people will also be able to tip more than the base price, like on bandcamp, although that's by no means necessary

of course for a $15 game we're talking a difference of a couple bucks per purchase here, so it's not exactly highway robbery if people would rather get it on steam

Thinking about scifi or other fiction that imagines an alternative to the family: have you read Akwaeke Emezi's PET? It's set in a society after The Revolution where the family structure is more fluid and allows for different combinations of identities. And I think there's a character in the EXPANSE series who's the result of genetic engineering so he has eight biological parents. Just trying to think of potential examples.

i haven't read any of emezi's work, i will definitely look into it!! and yes i vaguely remember mr. holden's eight parents who all live in montana or whatever. as much as i appreciate examples like that which do work to expand definitions of family and so destabilize the definition of family we share, that post was more about trying to go beyond the family entirely, and about reflecting that i've read verrrry few stories that don't have any form of family structuring them at all. i think it speak to how overdetermined our senses of self and subjecthood are by our relations to family, whether those relationships be positive or negative; we almost don't know how to tell a story that is not about either reuniting with or breaking away from family and it is difficult to imagine how a person who was not raised with any concept of family as we understand it would think or feel or behave. (i think everything for everyone offers a starting point for answering this question, and gave me a lot to think about re: what someone in a family-less society would be like.)

even in holden's case, i feel like i remember part of his characterization/backstory being that he originally went to space because he felt sort of suffocated by having eight parents? i could definitely be misremembering but the point is that i feel like scifi is overwhelmingly constructed in reference to the family and that it's really limiting as a framework, so limiting that expanding it to include alternative family configurations is not enough. if that were one approach among many i might feel differently about it, but the fact that it's one of the most radical treatments of family and still manages to be so referential of our current social configuration i think says a lot about the current state of the genre when it comes to how reproductive labor is portrayed or conceptualized.

As a fan of both sentai TV series and superhero comics, what would you say are the significant differences in the two genres? They both roughly boil down to "costumed heroes fight evil," but they go in very different directions.

Sentai/Rider shows have a finite one-year ending and are always built around fighting a single enemy organization, which is a pretty significant departure from superhero comics, which are (usually) intended to be perpetual stories with an endless wealth of varied villains to keep things interesting for the next 70-odd years. 

That’s probably the big one.
