불확실성에 대한 두려움, 완벽이라는 함정, 이해와 인정에의 욕구 예술적 재능은 학습될 수 있다. 근본적으로, 예술 작업을 해나가는 사람들은 지속하는 법을 배운 자들, 좀 더 정확히 말해 중지하지 않는 법을 배운 자들이라고 할 수 있다. 대중이나 심지어 동료들로부터의 지지를 중요시하게 되는 순간, 감상자의 손에 위험할 정도의 큰 권한이 들려진다는 것이다. 자신의 작품을 들여다보면 열의를 가지고 작업에 임했을 때와 그렇지 않았을 때를 구별할 수 있다. 창작자가 게으르면 작품도 게을러지고 창작자가 열의를 잃으면 작품도 그러하며, 창작자가 주저하면 작품도 주머니에 손을 찌른 채 바라보고 서 있다. 반면 창작자가 마음먹으면 작품은 불길처럼 타오른다. 새 작품에서 중요한 것은 이전의 작품보다 좋은지 나쁜지가 아니라 그 방식이 서로 유사한지 다른지에 관한 것이다. 어떤 사람들은 영감으로, 어떤 사람들은 자극으로, 혹자는 절망감으로 예술을 창조한다. 흥미로운 대답을 찾는 사람들은 흥미로운 물음을 제기하는 사람들이다. 최선을 다하지 않음으로 아예 기쁨을 얻을 생각을 하지 말든가. 불확실성의 선택이 더 안전해 보이는 이유는 뭘까?
