About
Ted Talks became a thing after Richard Wurman, an architect, came up with the concept of Technology, Entertainment, and Design. Currently, Sapling Foundation owns Ted Talks. The Sapling Foundation is a non-profit foundation organization. In 1996, publishing entrepreneur, Chris Anderson, established the Sapling Foundation. As of 2001, Chris Anderson—the Sapling Foundation founder—became the owner of Ted Talks.

How it makes Money
Ted Talks make money in the following ways:

Conference Costs
As of 2006, attendance cost was $4,400 per person by invitation only. As of 2007, the annual membership fee was $6,000 and included attending the conference, club mailings, networking tools, and conference DVDs.
Ted Talks in Greater Detail
Ted Talks are supported by partnerships with carefully selected organizations. The ads on the videos and website support from the carefully selected organization make Ted Talks available to the world for free in many languages (over 120) and on many platforms. Ted.com and the mobile apps allow great ideas to be easily accessible to the world for free thanks to the money that TED receives.
