What makes PSU Football so successful? Is it the state of the art training facility, the nice uniforms, individual athletic talents, or the vast alumni network? I guess you could say it’s a combo of all those things….but PSU Head Football Coach, James Franklin, would have much different things to say than you and I. In his recent TEDxPSU talk, James Franklin spoke about the philosophy of the wildly successful PSU football team. He attributes this success to the 4 core values for the program:
“1. POSITIVE ATTITUDE- Franklin explains that your attitude is something that is always in your control. You can wake up and decide to be happy or angry. If you live your life with passion and positive emotions, you will show your inner character to all those who you come in contact with. Choosing to have a positive attitude can transform you from the inside out.
2. WORK ETHIC- Don’t let anyone outwork you….EVER. If you take the time to prepare day in and day out success will naturally find you.
3. COMPETITION- Is key! In all areas of your life be the most competitive and most dedicated to whatever it is you are doing. The American dream is built upon competition and work ethic. If you want the nice house and the white picket fence then you have to be willing to work your butt off to get it. Nothing worthwhile in life will ever just be handed to you.
4. SACRIFIC- Everybody wants to be successful but VERY few people will actually be successful. You have to make the hard sacrifices to be truly successful. You have to make small choices & sacrifices every single day if you want to be the best version of yourself and have it all.” -(James Franklin, TEDxPSU, 3/1/2015)
Franklin might have been talking specifically about the PSU Football Program, but we here at Summer Study think you can apply these 4 core values to your life as well.
Being a teenager is tough these days, there is no denying that. Increased pressure from parents and teachers, peer pressure from “the cool kids”, and the daunting thoughts of college can drive teens to the breaking point......So teens, when you’re feeling like you just can’t take anymore…always remember James Franklin’s 4 core values …have a positive attitude, work hard, compete honestly, and sacrifice greatly!
