If you have thatinsatiable travel bug, the deep feelings of wanderlust, and the desire to getaway from the mundane…then I have the best news you will hear all day… Summer 2015 is being hailed as the best summer to go to Europe! I know I know, deep breathes, inhale, exhale, inhale, and exhale. While in our hearts it might always be the best time to go to Europe, it might not always be the best time for our wallet. But, this summer you are in luck and your wallet will love you for it! The strong American dollar and the weak Euro have given way to the lowest Euro value in 12 years! Simply put….that means you’re getting more bang for your buck. So teens if you have been begging your parents for years to let you go to Paris….now is your chance. Below are 4 steps to ensure that you will be sashaying down the Champs-Élysées with Summer Study Programs. 1.   When speaking to your parental unit, throw around fancy phrases like, “weakened Euro” and “great economical investment.” 2.   Talk about the important social & cultural aspects of a study abroad program… like becoming friends with teens from all over the world, seeing the Mona Lisa, and celebrating Bastille Day.  3.   Bring up that this is a wonderful academic opportunity and would be very beneficial to your future. You will be able to study a wide range of subjects from Contemporary Global Issues to Digital Photography. 4.   With the pressures of the school year on hold, traveling abroad with a pre-college program allows for personal growth and the successful development of self-confidence & independence. And last but certainty not least…. 5.   You will bring home really awesome souvenirs for your parents
Raise your hand if you LOVE volunteering!!
Once again Colorado State University tops the list for the most grads volunteering with the Peace Corps. CSU currently sits in 8th place overall for schools located in the United States. CSU presently has 51 alumni serving around the world with the Peace Corps Organization. CSU and The Peace Corps have a long history with one another. Before the creation of the Peace Corps, two CSU researchers published a study about the positive effects that an international volunteer organization could have, if created. That research became influential in President Kennedy’s decision to create The Peace Corps in 1961. Since then CSU has had more than 1,600 grads step out of their comfort zone and volunteer all over the world through the Peace Corps. CSU grad, Adel Uhlarik, who volunteered in Senegal said, “My village taught me how to be genuinely generous, how to love a community, how to need a village, how to forgive and how to serve even when it hurts.” (Original article by Anne Gerber, 2/ 27/15)
If you are a teenager reading this you might be thinking …. “I’m too young to make a difference in the world. What could I possibly do that would help to impact the lives of those around me?” Well, we here at Summer Study have the answer to your question! Our pre-college program at CSU offers an amazing opportunity for teenagers to spend their summer making a difference in the lives of those around them. Students in our, Community Service: Be a Leader in the Community Workshop, partner with Habitat for Humanity Fort Collins to build affordable, low cost housing for those in need. This year our students will be helping to build homes in a special Habitat Neighborhood and volunteering in the Habitat ReStore. While working with Habitat for Humanity our students learn more than how to use a hammer, they learn how to “bring people & communities together and spread hope & joy.”
Our Community Service Workshop is one of our most popular and rewarding pre-college workshops that we offer at both Colorado State University & Penn State University. Our students end the summer with a great sense of pride, accomplishment, compassion, kindness, and maturity.
If this sounds like an amazing way to spend your summer contact us to see how you can join Summer Study and make a difference in the world.
What makes PSU Football so successful? Is it the state of the art training facility, the nice uniforms, individual athletic talents, or the vast alumni network? I guess you could say it’s a combo of all those things….but PSU Head Football Coach, James Franklin, would have much different things to say than you and I. In his recent TEDxPSU talk, James Franklin spoke about the philosophy of the wildly successful PSU football team. He attributes this success to the 4 core values for the program:
“1.   POSITIVE ATTITUDE- Franklin explains that your attitude is something that is always in your control. You can wake up and decide to be happy or angry. If you live your life with passion and positive emotions, you will show your inner character to all those who you come in contact with. Choosing to have a positive attitude can transform you from the inside out.
2.   WORK ETHIC- Don’t let anyone outwork you….EVER. If you take the time to prepare day in and day out success will naturally find you.
3. Â Â COMPETITION- Is key! In all areas of your life be the most competitive and most dedicated to whatever it is you are doing. The American dream is built upon competition and work ethic. If you want the nice house and the white picket fence then you have to be willing to work your butt off to get it. Nothing worthwhile in life will ever just be handed to you.
4.   SACRIFIC- Everybody wants to be successful but VERY few people will actually be successful. You have to make the hard sacrifices to be truly successful. You have to make small choices & sacrifices every single day if you want to be the best version of yourself and have it all.” -(James Franklin, TEDxPSU, 3/1/2015)
Franklin might have been talking specifically about the PSU Football Program, but we here at Summer Study think you can apply these 4 core values to your life as well.
Being a teenager is tough these days, there is no denying that. Increased pressure from parents and teachers, peer pressure from “the cool kids”, and the daunting thoughts of college can drive teens to the breaking point......So teens, when you’re feeling like you just can’t take anymore…always remember James Franklin’s 4 core values …have a positive attitude, work hard, compete honestly, and sacrifice greatly!

"Life was meant for good friends and great adventure"
Mondays can be pretty depressing. You have to wake up early and get back to the grind of work and school. The mere thought of Monday sends shudders up my spine! …….But, today is a special kind of Monday…. It’s the kind of Monday I don’t mind facing….Its #ReadAcrossAmerica & #DrSeuss Birthday!
It doesn’t matter how old you are, you can’t deny the fact that Dr. Seuss is …wait for it …(Insert Barney Stinson Voiceover)…..Legendary….
Everyone at some point in their life has read Green Eggs and Ham and Oh the Place You’ll Go. Dr. Seuss is an integral part of our early school years and follows us thru to our college graduations. I can attribute my love of reading now to those early years spent reading Dr. Seuss.
Reading can do amazing things. Books can transcend far beyond our ordinary lives and take us to places we could only dream about. We relate to them on personal and emotional levels. They can make us cry and laugh till we are in so much pain that we want to stop reading…but you don’t because you NEED to find out how it all ends. Books keep us on our toes and our minds sharp.
Teenager, Helena Coggan, is a published author who many are calling the next J.K Rowling. She wrote the first draft of her novel, The Catalyst, at 13 years old….during her lunch breaks at school! She centered her story on a different kind of heroine. One is who is not concerned with boys or her outward appearance, but one who is concerned with saving the world. Helena is a great example of how anyone can achieve their dreams, especially teenagers. All it takes is a little imagination, dedication, and tenacity to succeed!
Keep dreaming and keep reading and the world will be yours!
Some of our favorite books at Summer Study are, Lunch Money And Other Poems About School; The All Girls Filling Station; The Count of Monte Cristo; Guns, Germs, and Steal; A Man For All Seasons; Tuesdays with Morrie; Cain & Abel; Charm School; Outliers; David & Gollith
Who doesn't love stories about people making it and living their dreams ?Â
Denna Thomsen, is no stranger to the spotlight. You might have seen her dancing in commercials, during the Super Bowl Halftime Show, or most recently on the Jimmy Kimmel Show with Sia. When you’re watching the video, it is obvious that Denna is an amazingly talented dancer. But, onething that isn't as obvious is that..... she’s a Colorado State University Alum! Woo, great job, Denna! Go Rams!
Why A Summer Study Program Might Be The Best Thing For You....
Get a “Taste” of College Life…Enjoy the freedom and learn to be more independent & assertive. Experience community living…do your own laundry (GASP, yes teenagers, you can master the art of sorting lights from darks!)…order a late-night pizza (do you want pepperoni with that?) and move with the “beat and pulse” of a university….All in 1 summer!Â
Meet new people….With students from across the United States and around the world, you’ll be amazed to discover how much you have in common and before you know it you’ll have plenty of #bff and #bae before the summer is over.Â
Separate yourself from your High School Peers…With college acceptances being more and more difficult for high school seniors (hit pause on your freak out, we are here to help!) completing a Summer Study program will give you that “edge” over students, who use the summer to do ordinary teenage things like, work, play video games, and sleep late.Â
Earn College Credits and/or Take Enrichment Classes to explore new subject areas…From Intro to Business, Law, Architecture and Engineering to Careers and Trends in Medicine, Sports Marketing & Management, Psychology, or The History of Rock & Roll Music…you can find something that will fit your interests really well.Â
At Summer Study we strive to give teenagers the best opportunities to gain valuable experience in their areas of interest. We feel that experience is one of life’s greatest teachers and we want our students to get a little taste of all that college life has to offer. We hope our programs will inspire kids to have a desire to achieve their dreams through higher education.Â
If this sounds like summer for you, visit our website or call the office, and pick our brains and find the best program for you!
#Thon
You might be saying to yourself, what the heck is #Thon??? Well simply put, it is the largest student run philanthropy event in…wait for it…THE WORLD
Since 1977 Penn State University’s 46 Hour Dance Marathon has raised more than 100 million dollars for pediatric cancer research. Last year alone, #Thon raised $13,343,517.33.
#Thon weekend is the culmination of months of hard work and preparation by the student body of Penn State’s University Park Campus. Over 700 dancers and 600 student run organizations will be represented on the dance floor at the Bryce Jordan Center from 6pm February 20 to 4pm 22nd.
During this long 2-day stretch of time there are 2 crucial rules all #Thon participants must follow….1. There is absolutely NO sleeping and 2. There is absolutely NO standing……ONLY DANCING.
There is a reason #Thon thrives on the Penn State Campus. #Thon is not for the faint of heart, the apathetic, or the weak.  #Thon is for the passionate, charitable, and strong. At Penn State, “Inspiration meets perspiration and head meets heart.” The character and zeal of the Penn State family is why #Thon thrives.
#SummerStudyPSU Alum, Jon Klingements, remarked that the 46 hours of dancing at #Thon were the greatest and most meaningful moments of his life. Â
#SummerStudyPSU is proud to be a part of the Penn State family for over 20 years.  We wish our Penn State families a wonderful weekend and our hearts will be on the dance floor this weekend because…..#WEAREPENNSTATE
