[unsent text] What about your mom?
Toothless scowled at the mention of Snotlout. "I think you mentioned Fishlegs once, and I don't know about this Ruffnut and Tuffnut... and Snotlout is an ass. I don't know how your relationship was with your own cousin, but this Snotlout is a typical jock bully that seemed to be brought to life from a corny teenage drama."
"Haha, sounds about right. We had begun to get along alright, though, well, Snotlout is Snotlout. But how did your Hiccup become the leader of your gang? You said you used to be called the Night Fury, what does that mean here?"
This was all so strange and fascinating. Somehow, the people and dragons Hiccup knew had come together again in a different life. It sent a glow of happiness through Hiccup that he would meet Toothless and Astrid again, even hundreds of years in the future. He wondered who all was here. Even Phil, maybe? Hiccup bit back a laugh.
He wasn't even thinking about his empty stomach.
Toothless listened to his story patiently. It was like when his Hiccup taught them about how the police works all over again. He seemed to be able to get people to listen to his every words if he managed to convinced them. "Astrid followed you into the cove? Oh hell, so our Lieutenant is probably the reincarnation of this Astrid too, huh? Next thing you know our dear beloved Mayor is the reincarnation of Red Death or something..." His thought darkened. That wouldn't be a surprise.
"Astrid, too?" Hiccup asked, starting to grin. Somehow, it seemed everyone had come back together. "Don't tell me Fishlegs, Snotlout, Ruffnut and Tuffnut are all here as well?"
"From fighting dragons to training dragons... that /really/ sounds like something our Hiccup would have done." Toothless leaned on the wall, staring at his other self. "And how did you two meet? In the dragon arena?"
"Not exactly," Hiccup said, chuckling nervously. "More like how you met your, uh, me. I built a bola canon and shot Toothless down during a dragon raid. For most of my people's history, we fought the dragons. I, uh, injured Toothless so he couldn't fly. I didn't realize at first, I was so excited that I had taken down a dragon - and a Night Fury no less! No one had ever seen one before. It always attacked blending into the night, and never missed. But I couldn't kill him."
Toothless bumped his head against Hiccup, who reached over to rub his head. "Stop trying to look cute, you were anything but the first time we met.
"I cut off the rope and Toothless pinned me down. I thought for sure I was dead meat, but he didn't kill me. He just roared in my face and ran away.
"I went back and found him, trapped in a cove because he couldn't fly without half of his tail fin. So I earned his trust and built him a new one."
Toothless flicked his tail up to show it off.
"It doesn't work on it's own though; I have to control it from this pedal." He indicated the saddle.
"I tried to show my village that we didn't have to fight the dragons. But, my dad can be pretty stubborn. It's a Viking thing. He wouldn't listen. Not until he saw the Red Death. A dragon the size of a mountain that controlled all the others. If they didn't bring back enough food, it would just eat them. Toothless had already taken me to the island, along with Astrid. She followed me to the cove the day I was going to run away. You see, the final exam at dragon training was to kill a dragon in front of the entire village. I couldn't do that, so I was going to leave with Toothless.
"It's a good thing she did," Hiccup added to his Toothless, "Or Berk might have never come to peace."
"Glad I'm not the only one finding this whole cosmic coincidence thing funny." Toothless relaxed, feeling a lot more comfortable around this other Hiccup. It was strange, he knew this wasn't his Hiccup but he felt the same calmness when he was around him. "So, what's this about The Academy? Sounds fancy for a Viking."
"Not really," Hiccup said modestly. "It used to be the arena for dragon training. As in fighting the dragons. But now - er, in my time - it's a Dragon Training Academy."
It was strange to think of this man as Toothless. And yet, Hiccup felt a similar sort of trust or kinship. This man may be capable of killing him with little effort, but he wasn't going to.
Toothless rumbled curiously, looking between the humans.
"There's the twins, Barf and Belch." He started, "And Hookfang, Meatlug..." He blushed when he mentioned the motherly woman, only to change his expression quickly when mentioning the last name. "Oh, and that bitch Stormfly. We actually have more member than that, but the ones I told you are the ones who usually lead when Hiccup--I mean, /our/ Hiccup isn't around."
Hiccup's jaw dropped. Toothless' ears flicked at the familiar names and his head tilted curiously.
"But that's all the dragons. Those are the dragons my friends ride, the ones from the Academy. They all came back as humans? In a gang?" Okay, the gang part maybe was not all that surprising. But he was leading them? Just like back home. It was like history was repeating itself.
"Wait." Hiccup stepped forward without really realizing it, eyes scanning over the other Toothless. He didn't have any visible handicaps, but there was not a lot of skin showing. He had mentioned that the Hiccup he knew hit him with a wrench. Hiccup huffed out a sigh, shoulders dropping in relief. A smile crept across his face. So he didn't have to ground this Toothless to meet and earn his trust - unless he'd done some brain damage with that wrench.
"Reincarnation huh?" Toothless mulled over the possibilities. "Well, I have already seen a dragon today, plus a time traveler. Why not add another mind-blowing thing to the list?" He laughed with that strange sound of his. "Imagine, I'm a reincarnation of a dragon and my gang is called The Dragons. I think that's too much for a coincidence."
"You have no idea. Huh? Then..." No, that would be ridiculous. For him and Toothless to meet again in a new life was crazy enough.
"What are the other members of your gang called?" His curiosity was too much.
"Wow, really? Wouldn't have noticed." Toothless deadpanned. "Anyway, you already traveled through time and shit, and you have a motherfucking dragon!" He gestured his arms to the other Toothless. "And you asked /how/ I am human?"
"Well, for me you're a dragon! Always have been! Oh, this makes no sense." Hiccup threw his arms around. "So, is this a different world? Not just time, but a..." He didn't know what to call it. "Or reincarnation? I guess if dragons are extinct you couldn't exactly come back as one."
