New blog!

I’m moving! I don’t really do much on this old Tumblr, and I’ve been thinking for a long time both that I need to be on here being useless less or turn it into something more productive. So I’m finally going to try out a literary blog. Or rather, I’m going to really commit myself to the one I made some weeks ago by officially leaving this account. If anyone is interested, my new blog is @booksandberries. If you like the content of this blog, I’m also going to have a sideblog to function like this one, @beeonastrawberry (if anyone saw it before, that was the original name of my lit blog, but I’m switching things up.) I won’t disappear from here immediately - my queue is filled up. But there isn’t really anything holding me here so. Here’s to the success of my new blog!

Figured I should post this over here, too (since I'm still??? getting new followers???) This httyd rp blog has been dead a long time. I still love httyd, but I mostly post about other things now (until httyd 3 gets closer tbh). Having an active blog show up when I like posts and follow people was honestly one of the reasons I moved. When you’re carding, spinning and weaving everything from scratch, using the big squares exactly as they come off the loom must seem like a fucking brilliant idea. 90% (or more) of pre-14th century clothing is made purely on squares (and sometimes triangles cut from squares).

How did they get the fabric so fine it draped like that? Was that something medieval europe forgot? Or do I just have a completely misguided image of historical clothing?

Medieval Europe also had incredibly fine weaves, though the ancient world tended to have them beat. Linen was found in Egypt woven with a fineness that we’re still trying to replicate, and there was a kind of cotton woven in India called ‘woven wind’ that was supposedly still translucent at eight layers, and wool shawls so fine that the entire thing could be drawn through a wedding ring. 

The way they could get away with pinking and slashing doublets in the 16th century was partially because the fabrics were so tightly woven that you could simply cut a line on the bias and nothing would fray. 

Modern fabric machining sucks ass in terms of giving us any kind of quality like the kind human beings produced prior to the Industrial Revolution.

The Celts made very fine clothing as well. They invented plaid after all, and the same weaves that have been found at the La Tene/Halstatt salt mines in Austria were also found as far away as western China in the tombs of the Tarim mummies.

Can we talk about 18th century and regency era muslin as well because that shit is gorgeous. It’s so fine it’s more transparent than silk chiffon and oh the tiny hems you can make with it!! I have an 18th century neckerchief and the hem is about 2mm wide. Not kidding, 2mm!!! Because it didn’t fray like our stuff does now. All we can produce nowadays is a rough, scratchy, bullshit excuse for muslin and it’s horrid.

I love this because we’ve gotten so blind to what makes ‘good’ fabric now - machine lace? horrible scratchy shit mostly made from poly. Actual lace is handmade, lasts for fucking EVER and looks stunning. 

Regency gowns fucking rocked in terms of fabric quality - we use muslin as a ‘throw away’ before sewing the real fabric, back then it WAS a real fabric and it was so finely made you wouldn’t even think it was the same stuff. 

Hand hemming is still the best way to finish off anything, but harder than hell because of the shitty weave of modern fabrics. 

Satin? Silks?!

Pah. Yes, fabric is cheaper, more affordable and varied than before, but it is an area where QUALITY was sacrificed for QUANTITY. 

(I don’t want to seem like I’m shitting on how great we have it now for clothes and martials or anything, because YAY!! but also, I’d love to get my mits on a bolt of real Muslin)

How do you make such great skin texture in photoshop? I've tried a couple times and it just turns out looking... wrong. Any tips on painting human skin textures?

I do it like this:

First I start with some base colors.

Then I add scribbles.

Then I add more scribbles, and maybe change the layer to overlay or something so it’s more translucent.

Then I blur everything. Or smudge it. Depending on what will look best.

And then I repeat, using a smaller and softer brush as I go. Until I get something that looks like this:

You can also add noise and blur it that way:

But I don’t like noise layers that much because the undertones are always changing, and it’s harder to color. I’d rather just paint the undertone.

That’s really it, though. It’s a controlled scribble.

I use the same technique for stubble, leather, and metal, too. Like a suit of armor? I do it the same way:

This is how I paint skin texture.

But how I do the actual skintones is trickier. I usually stick to this rule of thumb:

Highlights = low saturation light yellow Midtones = low saturation middle orange/brown Shadows = middle saturation dark red/brown

So something like this:

I’ve found the ratio works pretty well for any skintone, light or dark, as long as you aren’t an alien or a mermaid. And obviously it’s very generalized. Most of the time I’m working straight from observation anyway, so the skin is whatever color it is and rules go out the window. Different lighting will affect skintone in all different ways.

But what you DON’T want to do is pick a fleshtone and then add black and white to it. Highlights and shadows will be completely different colors.

This process from another artist is also pretty close to how I do it.

a lot of this website has fallen into the trap of equating being pro people who struggle with mental illness with being anti recovery, and even goes so far as to glorify and enable maladaptive symptoms and behaviors.  This is a monumentally  stupid idea.  Illnesses and disorders are called that for a reason.  They are not Cake and Happy Funtimes.  They make you miserable,  they make the people around you miserable, and everything sucks.

Posts that say “Keep trying to do this thing, even when you struggle with it,” are saying that for a reason.  It’s fighting back against the illness, refusing to let it claim you. Yeah, it’s hard!  Yeah, it sucks!  Yeah, it’s okay for you to take a break if you need to!  Yeah, it’s perfectly fine if you can’t do it alone and need to ask for help!  Sometimes lots of help!  But keep fighting.  Keep resisting.  It’s your life at stake.

Emergency Furnace Fund

Hey guys, uh… my furnace broke. It seems that the control board is shorting or has gone bad in some way and needs to replaced, either that or certain components, and until it is repaired, the heat does not come on. It has already been pretty cold in the house (right around 49, 50 degrees) and around Thursday evening the temperature outside is expected to be around 17 degrees. To purchase a new control board can be up to $170. If that is not the problem, it will be down to hiring somebody to come look at the furnace, but I know that will cost far more than replacing the part ourselves (and we can’t even get an estimate until they walk in the door, which costs money in itself). In either case, I can’t afford it. 

I would not ask for help were it not going to be so cold, but it seems winter has finally arrived in full force. I don’t have the usual back up from commissions that I had in the summer as sales have gotten a bit scarce, my foodstamps got taken away, my prescriptions actually DOUBLED in price… so on and so forth, it’s all a bit too much.

I have placed a donate button in my description. As we need to get the furnace repaired by Thursday this week, I am hoping to raise at least the $170 for the computer board. You are by no means required to give and I encourage people to spend their money however they see fit this Christmas season (there are a lot of occasions to be charitable) but please consider sending a couple of dollars my way if you can. I still have a little over a month until my next full paycheck, (thank you school system!) and my part time job is cutting my hours until further notice. I don’t get my paycheck for last month until friday, but I have two bills I need to pay before then, and also my phone bill is due on wednesday. I have this headcanon that for a while after HTTYD1, when Hiccup and Astrid have first started dating, and it’s all very nervous and giggly and tentative and your run-of-the-mill early teens figuring out this whole ‘dating’ thing, that Stoick is very very scared that it is all going to fall apart. He’s worried that Astrid is just into Hiccup because he’s now a hero, and that eventually the glamour is going to fade, and that his dorky little son and this tough very-Viking girl are going to realize that they are too different, and it will all crash and burn and Thor above, he does not have the slightest clue how he is supposed to comfort a heartbroken 15 year old boy whose first girlfriend just dumped him.

Stoick already likes Astrid very much, and he’s hoping and praying to every god there is that it works out, but he’s also pretty much convinced that this relationship is living on borrowed time. 

Then Snoggletog rolls around, and he’s looking around at his entire village on fire, holes blown in the roofs of houses, and a small heard of baby Gronkles are waddling around the town square. And when he asks who is responsible for this madness, he’s expecting Hiccup to pop out of the wreckage and give him that sheepish smile, or for the twins to step forward and cackle with mad pride.

Instead, the other teens push forward a wide-eyed Astrid Hofferson, who gulps and whispers, “…the eggs explode.”

And Stoick looks around at the chaos, the destruction, all the damage that came out of such good intentions….

and bursts into laughter, because good gods, this girl is going to be his daughter-in-law someday, he just knows it.

okay so let me share a paragraph from the 5E monster manual:

So a) that’s fucking hilarious, some Vincent-Price-voiced motherfucking dragon knocking you out and you wake up to him in mid-monologue talking about Radiohead’s discography in Excruciating Detail, and b) i think carries the key to understanding and running dragons, which is:

Dragons are naturally giant firebreathing dinosaur wizards that can fly, and so no one has ever told them no. It doesn’t matter whether they’re good dragons or evil dragons, they have an overwhelming sense of entitlement to Everything.

a dragon doesn’t demand tribute. a dragon views you not already wanting to give them your best stuff on account of how cool & great they are as an intentional, personal insult. if you’re lucky, they will respond by throwing a tantrum and wrecking your home, your town and your kingdom. if you’re not lucky, they will first show up at your door in a huff and demand to know why you’re disrespecting them in this manner and why you hate them, then working themselves into a tantrum and wrecking your home, your town and your kingdom.

dragons suffer from the dunning-kruger effect more than even white dudes from san francisco with a tech start-up. they don’t take criticism well, which is a moot point because no one is criticizing them. they often fancy themselves masters of art or deception or repartee, but they’re really, um, not. they demand and crave recognition for their Masterpieces, their Exploits, their Groundbreaking Innovations, and pity the hapless town who gets saddled with the dragon who fancies itself a comedian. (”i burned the church down as an act of satire, god, can’t you people take a joke?”)
