Maybe he just needs a break and get away from it all. He worked for two years constantly and on all kind of different projects. I can imagine how demanding and exhausting that must be. It’s not only about actually playing the role he was hired to play, but also the preparation it involves so he can inhibit the figure he’s supposed to play. That takes an awfull lot of energy. So him lying low for a while would only be natural.
I’m not trying to be dismissive of the work involved in preparing for such a role or the impact it might have, but one and a half years is more than “I’m exhausted from work” unless there are deeper problems (which I’m definitely not saying. But when someone is seriously exhausted from work after taking 14 months off that’s burnout or depression in the normal working world).
Tom has every right to not work as long as he wants and do whatever he likes. He can enjoy holidays for as long as he can pay for them without having to think about it. He can read all the books he likes or watch movies and plays, hell, sitting on the couch doing nothing is also great. Meet family and friends every day and spent time with loved ones can’t ever be done too much. Or he can work on projects that will never see the light of day. It’s all fine with me. Absolutely no shade here. None.
If he needs to find himself and do some soul searching he should take a sabbatical for as long as it takes him and do that until he is happy he found the right solution for himself.
Only the excuse “he worked two years non-stop and needs a break” sounds like a sorry excuse in my ears after 14 months in the way I understand “exhaustion from work” in a physical or mental sense. It’s a PR excuse for either not having work or not wanting work. :)
