Kuroko never felt comfortable in crowds. That was only part of the reason he spent so much time in the fourth gym, though. The other was the disdain everyone in the third string treated him with, even when they couldn’t aim their glares properly. It was just easier to practice on his own, where no one would trip over him or belittle him for missing nine out of ten shots.
That changed when the bright, orange haired kid started appearing every time he escaped there.
“Hello? Aumakua? Do you mind if I practice in here? Most everyone avoids this place so I figured it’d be a good place to play volleyball since Kubaru-Baka doesn’t let me in their gym.”
Kuroko could only blink at the entrance, where the kid was standing, as if waiting for permission to enter. Eventually, Kuroko had granted him a cautious nod before slowly returning to his drills, and the kid seemed to take the return of noise as permission to practice there.
This would happen again, and again, and AGAIN until Kuroko had completely acclimated himself to the bright presence. The oranget would chatter on about his day and everything he was learning (or not learning, as the case may be, it seemed the boy was something of a delinquent, and often went on tangents in a language he couldn’t recognize.) He grew to enjoy it. He was able to socialize without ever opening his mouth. It worked.
And then the kid disappeared.
For a day. Two. A week.
The orange boys absence was filled by a tall, dark haired boy. Aomine, as he learned his name was, wasn’t content to leave Kuroko in the shadows where he was comfortable. Oh, he came back, day after day, but never seemed satisfied with Kuroko’s efforts to improve. There was always something to nag, a jab to make, and Kuroko got very good at ignoring the hole that was left by the oranget.
Until, one day, the oranget tumbled in once more, basketball in hand instead of a volleyball, blinking rain out of his eyes and blinking in the sight of Aomine holding Kuroko in a headlock.
“Aomine? What are you doing to my Aumakua?”
