Tekkoshocon 2012
So, This was my first time at Tekko, and it was Tekkoshocon X! Wow, 10 years. I'm so glad I was able to partake in it. I had a press badge, so over the course of the 4 days I was balancing filming the con versus enjoying the con. I've learned that the two are totally different things. Overall, here's what I thought of my experience.
I'll start with the things I DIDN'T like. Let's just say Tekko has made me wanna rage quit life. I got trolled so hard this weekend. Several things happened that I hope for future cons get fixed, here's a few:
1. Organization! The staff seemed a little organized at times. It almost seems like they were understaffed for a con that seems to have grown over the years. It could also be the venue. I hope one day its back at an actual convention center because while the Wyndham Grand Hotel is nice, it is not suited for con-goers, that's for sure.
2. Artist's Alley- WAY TOO SMALL. I don't know what they were thinking. It seemed ridiculous how they crammed so many tables into one room. No, just no. And from what I've heard, many people that applied for tables didn't get them. That could've been more money!
3. Gaming Rooms- Again, it was a space issue. I didn't even go up there more than once after finding out they just converted tiny cramped hotel rooms into game rooms. Very inconvenient and crowded. Especially with the heat.
4. Filming issues- I understand even though I'm part of the press that I can't film everything, but I want to be treated like a professional! Some of the shenanigans were just ridiculous. I wasn't allowed to film certain things or actors because of the tabloids. Not everyone that's in journalism goes for tabloids! In fact, very few do. I'm filming to benefit this convention and spread the word about it so that hopefully more people come. And for interviewing celebrities, actors, etc. this is for you too! I want to help you guys out! Help get the words out for the talents and accomplishments you guys have! I'm not your enemy! D:
5. Overall Space- Whether it was waiting in line for a Dr. Who panel (ridiculous) or waiting in line to get into the Dealer's Room, or just trying to find a relatively uncrowded area, space was an issue. There was constantly way too much traffic. We've outgrown the hotel.
Now that I've gone over most of what I didn't like, here is what i DID like:
1. Dealer's Room- The room was nice and spacious, and there was SO MUCH STUFF. I was especially impressed with the anime/manga booth. They had so many different things. I was very pleased with the setup. This was GOOD organization.
2. Cosplays- I'll admit I was a bit skeptical on how the cosplays would turn out after being there Thursday, but each day got better and better cosplays. I was very impressed guys. You're raising the bar on art and talent. Cosplaying is about making what is unreal, real. And we did that. Very nice job.
3. Panels- I didn't get to make it to a LOT of panels, but i was overall satisfied. The evangelion for bakas panel was nice and informational. It takes a lot for me NOT to like something EVA related <3. There was a "manga 101" panel and the girl was VERY talented and knowledgable on everything she was talking about. WELL DONE GIRL! Oh, and the yaoi panel....we wont' go there but that was a once in a lifetime experience. Whatever happened in that room I will probably never experience again.
4. Filming- I had such a great time interviewing everybody! I'm being serious when I say this. I learned so much about all of you and what you guys do. The time and effort you guys put into these conventions is incredible, it really is. Thank you for taking time out of your day to let me interview you. Also, filming Dansu to Pantsu was fun! They were soooo good.
5. Masquerade/Fashion Show- I had so much fun showing off my costume! I was SO NERVOUS but i enjoyed it. and the skits were hilarious. The girl who made the song about crossplaying KNOWS COMEDY. Her trophy was well-deserved. You go girl!
6. Fans- I knew choosing a relatively unknown cosplay would be a risk, since a lot of people wouldn't know who i was, but i was pleasantly surprised! It made me sooooooo happy when you guys came up and asked for a picture. Seeing people's faces light up when they saw my costume is something I'll cherish forever. Seriously, thank you guys so much. You'll never know how much that meant to me.
Overall, I had a good time. It was a bit stressful due to space/crowding issues as well as the stress of filming all 4 days, but I think it paid off in the end. If i can showcase this so more people will give anime conventions a chance, then I've succeeded. I hope to see you all at Otakon 2012. Look for Ranulf from Fire emblem and Impa from Skyward Sword! ;)
