For the Fanfic Day meme - 2, 5, 9 & 13!
2. What is your favorite snippet of dialogue?
God, how am I supposed to choose? Dialogue is my thing.
I’d probably go with everything between Sans and Grillby in Chapter 8 of Scorched Scraps and Tatters because that was a very rough, very emotional, very visceral conversation that people apparently got a lot out of.
Though, while we’re talking Undertale, I’m proud of Sans’ speech to Papyrus in Line in the Snow where he finally starts to convince his brother that life doesn’t always have to be this way.
For sheer snappiness, shout out to Fjord calling Maxwell out on his bullshit in Traveling Hearts. Finally maneuvering someone into a position where they could put the pieces together was immeasurably satisfying, and being able to write a “is now really the time? / now is exactly the time” type conversation was fun.
Also, probably the dream sequence i wrote with the Traveler and the scene he’s got coming up. I…don’t quite know what I unleashed by writing him but it’s pretty cool, if I do say so myself.
5. What is your favorite headcanon that you use in fics?
Probably the idea that Sans does on some level remember the resets. I know there’s evidence to say he doesn’t but I also think there’s evidence to show he does. I know he doesn’t remember perfectly! I think things definitely get confused and tangled in his head. But I think he remembers Enough to depress the fuck out of him.
Also the idea that Sans’ left eye is Gaster’s eye. I haven’t actually gotten to work that into a lot of fics but I really, really like it. Assume that it’s always in the back of my mind.
I guess the idea that skeletons can eat also counts as a headcanon.
9. What is the fic you like least?
HM. I’m generally pretty fond of all my fics for one reason or another. But I’d probably go with “The Things Nightvale Does Not Prepare You For”. It was gratuitous and pointless, even for me. Also, “And Then There Was One” just got melodramatic, especially now that I know Jason Aaron really does not give a good god damn about Loki. : /
13. Do you have a favorite character to write for?
For any given canon, I will usually fixate on one that is Mine. The vast majority of my fic will be from their POV. The vast majority of the whump will be inflicted on them. They usually tend to be the quieter, more somber and depressive types. But I’ll also usually have one backup dude I can write for when my main punching bag is incapacitated beyond language.
Critical Role is probably the first case where I’ve been able to trick myself into deliberately breaking that pattern - I set out to try and “practice” writing Jester as a thought exercise and damn did that turn out to be fun.
Straight up, though, my two favorite characters to write for are probably Sans and Caleb. They’re the ones I find myself getting the most personally invested in and investing most of my own habits and quirks into.
(Fanfic Day might be over but you can still send me questions!)
