The map masters at TeleGeography have charted the course the internet takes to cross the seas in 2014, and the result is fascinatingly complex.

This map show internet exchange points, places where networks physically meet in order to 'peer', which means that one of the engineers working there plugs their routers together. As with tweetping you can see accumulation towards higher-developed countries. Brazil, for example can be clearly made out against the rest of South America. The dense forest of exchange points in Europe ends abruptly with the Russian border. 

However, considering that this is a map of the entire world, the exchange points are not that many, which becomes even more evident as soon as you zoom in a bit. Considering the amount of traffic, the choke points of the internet are actually few.

Che il web abbia imposto una rivoluzione copernicana ormai è un dato di fatto, anche se spesso tendiamo a dimenticarci quanto profondamente internet abbia modificato le nostre abitudini quotidiane. Un esempio su tutti? Le telefonate su Skype.

Secondo Telegeography Skype sarebbe diventato un colosso del traffico telefonico planetario. I dati più recenti mostrano infatti che nel corso del 2012 Skype ha avuto una crescita esponenziale nelle chiamate internazionali, registrando un +44% rispetto all’anno precedente.

Questo dato è tanto più rilevante se si considera il fatto che, tradizionalmente, il traffico telefonico internazionale cresce lentamente (nel 2012 la crescita è stata appena del 5%, un abisso rispetto al traffico internet).

Non è stato Skype l’unico ad aumentare i volumi di traffico; con lui moltissime app e software che consentono le chiamate e i messaggi attraverso la rete. Un’app, ad esempio, che ha avuto un successo tale per cui sono rimasti ormai pochissimi a non averla scaricata, è Whatsapp. Si tratta di un’applicazione scaricabile su smartphone, che consente di mandare messaggi in maniera totalmente gratuita, sfruttando essenzialmente il traffico dati internet che al giorno d’oggi tutti i possessori di telefoni intelligenti hanno in abbonamento.

Persino Facebook, per non diventare il fanalino di coda della tecnologia, ha implementato il proprio servizio, permettendo ai propri utenti di effettuare chiamate vocali grazie alla sua applicazione Messenger. Impossibile (e sconveniente) non digitalizzarsi!
