Spoon's debut studio album was released on 23 April 1996.
After the release of their Nefarious EP in 1994, the band signed to Matador Records and John Croslin was brought on the produce the record with a budget of $3,000. Despite positive reviews (comparing the band to Pavement, the Pixies, and Wire), Telephono only sold a few thousand copies when it was first released.

Spoon • Not Turning Off (1996)
And I said to myself I'm not turning off So connect, connect, connect, connect to me
Matador Records housed and still contains a multitude of independent music outfits with many of them receiving a significant break thanks to the label. Spoon, for instance, released their debut under the company we discuss and then they went to have a lengthy career. Of course, their introduction owed a lot to the scene at the time, I'm not surprised over the comparison to Pixies, though we can agree they move into a different direction than this famous band. Actually, they showed their own brand of indie rock at this point already, but we can notice they needed more time to develop that into their set of peculiarities. Sure, they did that later on, yet I have also observed they've returned to Matador recently, which suggests – what exactly?
