i think it’s pretty weird how the whole gen ai accusations & elimination of expedition 33 only came after it won basically everything at the game awards.

i don’t think it deserved to win everything— there were some incredible games nominated that i feel would’ve been better suited for specific categories (plus, i think that the game awards should be a celebration of games, and having one game sweep is a little reductive— but that’s a different topic entirely). however, it feels like some people saw the success of expedition 33 and tried to find something wrong with it afterwards.

sandfall was experimenting with ai in 2022 when it was brand new and shiny, and many people were doing the same: snapcube with sonic destruction, markiplier with his reaction content— and none of them had people lashing out like what is happening now. the end result was that they had the placeholder textures, literally said that “it felt wrong” (https://www.tumblr.com/kitsuleif/803773974098165760/exactly-what-i-expected-experimenting-with-new) and removed them.

overall, it feels like this whole thing is people trying to find something to get mad at just because expedition 33 swept at the game awards.

the way The Hobbit is written is so interesting because it's obviously a story-telling style, while also being an account of what Bilbo wrote down himself in his red book. So it's just full-on unreliable narrator, because the narrator can be either the nebulous author-translator or bilbo's sneaky little lies

it’s crazy to me how critics dislike iron lung because it’s “slow”. do you know what other movie was “slow”? 2001: a space odyssey, one of the most influential movies; considered one of the “best” of all time.

i’m not comparing the two movies, because that’s an idea for a different post— but we need to kill the idea that a slow movie is a bad movie. slow movies let the audience breathe; they let the audience ruminate and think about what the movie is telling them instead of mindlessly consuming that media. movies put out recently are so full of stimulation that they don’t let their audience engage with it— we’re just silent watchers.

iron lung, in its careful pacing, makes the viewer come to their own conclusions and encourages reflection.

The Hobbit book is less gay than the movie, but I still greatly enjoy the relationship between Thorin and Bilbo in the book. When Thorin smiles all proud while locked up in an Elven dungeon, noting how much he's come to care for and respect Bilbo? Yeah that does things to my heart

#the movie was half a second away from being an actual queer movie #I can't fault the book for not being as massively gay as the movie #but I still wish it was a little gayer because the Thorin-Bilbo relationship in the book is sooooo my jam #the quiet respect gained and the way Bilbo slowly becomes comfortable scolding a king #I'm a massive fan of relationships built that way instead of the enemies-to-lovers thing #which I feel the movie leans into very much by making Thorin a grumpy ass #also movie Bilbo is too wimpy please let him scold Thorin and be devious #tello talks #bagginshield
