Grogu quietly waddles over and lifts his arms up for uppies.
rey had for years believed the only thing that could adequately quiet her mind was burying herself in the depths of a starship or malfunctioning droid, slathering her hands in motor oil until she was a half-shadow of the troubled soul inside. fixing things was how she kept her head from spinning. fixing things was how she created a self that was far from doubtful or conflicted. under the lovingly peeled open chassis of any vehicle someone in the temple needed aid bringing back to life, rey was the most authentically herself she'd ever been.
in all her seventeen years living, she was the farthest from slavery but still held hostage. unduly, she swore to herself — and at herself, especially once she'd gripped a rim seal unevenly mid-rumination and the hydrospanner in her hand nearly went flying after a too fierce yank.
❝ stang. ❞ whipping her wrist back and forth, the young knight hissed out more curses until the startled ache of bone-on-bone collision faded from her joints. and then she looked up.
yawning above her like a blooming flower was the underside of an arc-170. all channels to the astromech intake port had been opened and the wiring bared, stripped, resoldered, and strung back together. rainbows of plastine tubing colored the inside of the starfighter cheerfully. almost as if a little child had imagined the guts of a ship to be as colorful as the outside and tossed paint hither and yon down the seams in machinery.
it was beautiful. she'd done a marvelous job, if rey said so herself. the ship was a work of art before and after, with just a little in between urging from her to mitigate fuse failure mid-flight.
gentle shuffling sounds might have been the only worthwhile reason to look away but rey found herself still turning. eagerly. sure enough, the expected little creature had snuck his way across the hangar floor to her little corner of carnage to stop by her feet.
❝ hello, grogu! ❞ it felt quite impossible keeping a smile from her face and voice, so rey didn't even bother trying. ❝ off on your own little adventure today? ❞
younglings were rarely not dear to rey's heart, but the smallest of all of them seemed to tug on many hearts similarly to how he did rey's. yet it still seemed that the tiny child became overwhelmed and willingly took himself on excursions around the temple for some space, and perhaps a little aforementioned adventure.
he did not speak as the other younglings did, although the arms were an obvious enough signal.
❝ would you like to come up? here — give me a moment. ❞ a nearby dropcloth flew into her waiting grasp with which to scrub at her hands and arms, ensuring no grease remained. once her relative cleanliness was satisfactory, rey slipped back into her robe. it draped suitably enough that wearing it backwards wouldn't impede her movement. ❝ alright, come come. ❞
the child nestled easily into rey's hood. deep folds managed to keep him secure without impeding his vision, although rey did tug the hem beneath his chin and kept one hand beneath his toes just to be certain.
❝ isn't this amazing? aaalll of these different little parts come together and work together to make a ship that can fly us across a hundred systems. almost like the order works, actually. ❞ her free hand skimmed along the hull of the ship in placid thought, imagining each of its thousands of parts, all their corners and materials, and how the ship could not function without them. ❝ we all need each other to be our best. ❞
latent sadness swirled in her gut at the still sharp memory of tiplar falling at the flash of a blaster. the emotion churned insistently before rey forced it to silence, afraid that her little companion might feel too much if she didn't keep her thoughts steady. but despite her caution grogu's presence managed to be soothing as she watched from over his fuzzy ears as his head turned, watching her hand and taking in what she gestured toward.
❝ i'm sure you'll have very exciting trips in something like this one day. you'll see places in the galaxy you've never dreamed of. but, i think it's time for a break. ❞ calling her utility belt to her hands, rey quickly strapped it 'round her waist and checked that her saber was securely clipped, feeling a rush of glee meet her melancholy and wash it clean. it could only be the force buoying them up. ❝ shall we go run around the fountains for a bit? ❞
