#2475 - Order Teloschistales - Sunburst Lichens and Allies
An order of mostly lichen-forming fungi with 5 families, 66 genera, and at least 1954 species. The predominant photobiont partners are green algae from the genera Trebouxia and Asterochloris. These algae may have been the first photosynthetic organisms on dry land, and the yellow and orange colour comes from anthraquinones produced by the fungus, that protect it from UV radiation and allowed the lichens to colonise exposed rocky habitat.
