How to visit a Shinto shrine in Japan 25,300 views•Sep 25, 2014
This is of course a little out of date. Do to Covid the Temizu fountains have been shut down in favor of hand sanitizers.
Chōzuya
A chōzuya or temizuya is a Shinto water ablution pavilion for a ceremonial purification rite known as temizu. Water-filled basins, called chōzubachi, are used by worshippers for washing their left hands, right hands, mouth and finally the handle of the water ladle to purify themselves before approaching the main Shinto shrine. Originally, this purification was done at a spring, stream or seashore and this is still considered the ideal.

Temizu - ritual purification on entering a shrine.
The purification fountain has been a time honored tradition at Shinto shrines for hundreds, perhaps thousands of years. You can even expect to find a small fountain outside a Tea house.
The procedure is to take the ladle in the right, rinse the left, switch hand, rinse the right, cup a little water in your hand, rinse your mouth, switch hands again, rinse the left, rinse the ladle handle by allowing the water to drain down the handle, and then return the ladle to the basin.
And then Covid hit.
A new take on temizu during the pandemic.
Here is a solution by Takamitsu Shrine in Mitaka, Tokyo: suggesting visitors disinfect their hands in lieu of temizu!

Temizu (water fountain) at Kameido Tenjin (亀戸天神社) in Tokyo. 亀 = kame = turtle. Note the turtle's flowing tail. That means it's a man-nen-kame (万年亀) or a 10 000-year-old turtle. The "tail" is actually moss growing on its back, symbolizing a long life.
